Learning journal
Week 1, 29/08/2022-02/09/2022:
How does it feel to be back at Avans?
Overwhelming, I don’t have all my credits from last year so I know that I’ll have to work hard
for my propodus and my second year at the same time.
What or who could help you in making this year the best ever?
Myself, I have to focus on my own wellbeing and strive for it.
I have to do school for myself instead of for my parents.
Week 2, 05/09/2022-09/09/2022:
What is your main learning/ take-out of today’s session?
We shared ideas we had for this semester and our experiences with the last year. We talked
about what we might want to do different this year.
Week 3, 12/09/2022-16/09/2022:
We had personal conversations and no learning journal questions.
Week 4, 19/09/2022-23/09/2022:
We had personal conversations and no learning journal questions.
Week 5, 26/09/2022-30/09/2022:
Did you come prepared for this session?
Partially, I thought about my method op planning.
But I did not look at the Covey’s Time Management Grid.
Week 6, 03/10/2022-07/10/2022:
Reflect on your part in the discussion today.
What will you do next week on the basis of the insights (what do you want to learn, do
better, become more aware of)?
I want to communicate what my thought are and how I’m going to handle something instead
of just doing it and telling afterwards. Impulsivity was something that came up in the results,
this is also part of my ADHD.
Which important Jung Personality Test learning will help you to be successful in your future
career?
I’m extroverted and I quickly interrupt people or do things without others knowledge.
I want to learn how to take others more into my concern and to be more interested in
people instead of just saying what I experienced.
Week 7, 10/10/2022-14/10/2022:
What personal insights have I gained?
The strengths that I have and which I would still like to develop, such as helpfulness and
patience.
What connotation does the term ‘leadership’ have for me? Which elements of leadership do
I recognize?
I think leadership is taking control but not in a way that it is a monarchy. The leader is
patient and kind, but strict in leading.
Why are these learnings important when developing your leadership skills?
How you give feedback is important so a person doesn’t feel attacked and shuts down.
What would you like to work on based on the feedback you got and why?
Time management because I want to show that I want to be there and work for my group.
What aspect of giving feedback would you like to work on, and why?
The way I bring it, the moment I give feedback out loud you went to far. I should
communicate sooner and more relaxed.
Were you confronted by your own past behaviour as a result of today’s session?
Yes, I was confronted with me doing stuff for children’s organizations. I subscribed people
which I knew from that they didn’t have the money but I needed the sale. That was against
my ethics.
Set an intention for how/what/where/when you will start preparing yourself for your
international experience.
During the Christmas break I will do all the research.
Week 15, 05/12/2022-09/12/2022:
The session of week 15 did not have learning journal questions.
What did you learn from reviewing the portfolios of your fellow SPs?
Samba did all the assignments with his group and that made it less personal.
Assignments
Week 1, 29/08/2022-02/09/2022:
The first thing we did was introduce ourselves and Tommy introduced himself.
We did assignments where you introduce yourself to classmates.
Activity 1:
What I shared during this assignment:
I’m 19 years old and I live in Breda. I like sports and I’m very creative.
We chatted more personally about how we did last year in IB and if we have resits.
Activity 2:
What did you expect you were going to learn this Y1 in PLC?
I expected to have a mentor experience in which she would talk to us about how everything
is going and if we needed help with speaking to the teachers.
Activity 3:
I made a group with, Stephanie Kuijlen, Nora Maas and Melanie van de Griendt.
Week 2, 05/09/2022-09/09/2022:
We did two group exercises for bonding and personalizing.
1. We had to stand in a U shape and stand in order based on height in 2 minutes.
2. Outside the classroom we could not speak and had to stand in order based on
birthday. This challenge was a bit harder than the first one but we almost had it right.
Assignment 1:
IBPP Assignment requirements:
The IBPP consists of 56 hours and will have three PLO’s.
There will be an online presentation of the main learnings.
Assignment 2:
What would you like to learn or get out of the PLC program for year 2?
I’m trying to go in open minded. But I hope to talk more about the structure of the week and
how to handle big assignments.
Week 3, 12/09/2022-16/09/2022:
In week 3 we had personal conversations.
Week 4, 19/09/2022-23/09/2022:
This week we talked about time management and talked about the tools we use to plan.
Timemanagement:
The process of organizing and planning how to divide time.
Assignment 1:
Why do we need time management?
A good planning gives less stress.
To work as affective as possible.
Socially, you have to discuss where and when to meet.
Assignment 2:
My group discussed time management tools:
Google calendar.
Notes app on iPhone.
Paper calendar.
WhatsApp.
How are the tools from the other SPs similar to the ones I brought?
A paper calendar is almost the same as in google calendar, just not digital.
Week 5, 26/09/2022-30/09/2022:
In week 5 we had personal conversations.
SMART Goals:
Personal:
I will go to bed at 23:00 and be out of bed 7:30 Monday to Friday till the end of the
schoolyear. This will be kept in my personal journal and be kept track of.
Professional:
I want to learn Spanish and I will spend three hours on Spanish per week till the end of
January. This will be measurable with assignments.
I did have a personal conversation, but it was about mental health and we didn’t discuss the
SMART goals.
Week 6, 03/10/2022-07/10/2022:
Reflect on if the planning has changed, have you adapted any strategies from other SP’s?
Yes, I put notifications on tasks. This strategy is adapted from Nora.
Assignment 1:
Things I’m good at:
1. Being creative.
2. Being a team player.
3. Problem solver.
Assignment 2:
Strengths in common:
Problem solvers.
Being a team player.
Assignment 3:
Nora: 1x per week getting together and talking about the project.
Melanie: Time management.
Stephanie: Not just chatting, but really getting to work.
Rinske: Leader aka Stephanie, to manage everyone going in line.
Group rules:
If somebody sends something, you give a thump up in the groups chat so we know you have
read it.
Dividing tasks:
Rinske: When is the deadline?
Nora: When do we meet up?
Melanie: What is the assignment?
Stephanie: Making sure everything goes in line.
Week 7, 10/10/2022-14/10/2022:
Assignment 1:
Assignment 2:
Qualities and habits of a good creative leader:
1. Being open minded.
2. Determination.
3. Passion.
4. Organization.
5. Planning.
6. Helpful.
7. Patient.
8. Confident.
This assignment I learned about personal development LW8, by looking at personal growth
in patience.
The goal for today is learning about the basic rules of giving feedback.
Learning to give and receive feedback.
The best scenario is when a Team Member can look back on a conversation and realize they
were coached in a fair and actionable fashion.
Dedication, really going all the way with giving someone feedback.
Feedback in general:
1. Explain what you observe.
2. Compliment what you like and why.
Positive:
Time management.
We were both on time.
It’s good that we are both up on time and planned well to get here.
Negative:
Selfcare.
We were on time because we didn’t eat breakfast.
If we would have gotten out of bed earlier, we can eat breakfast and be on time.
Research studies tell us that it takes 10 positive comments to balance out 1 negative one in
our brains.
Reciprocate:
Allow them to provide you feedback as well.
Trust is an important part of the feedback exchange. When a counterpart feels like you have
his or her best interest at heart, they are far more likely to listen to you and implement
changes based on your feedback.
Regular check-ins/ feedback given/ received for areas for improvement, allowing us to
implement changes incrementally as we progressed.
Provide specific examples.
Assignment 1:
Martijn.
You’re not present in class most of the time, with some reason.
You do what is asked of you, you deliver your work and it is alright.
You deliver half of what you said you would deliver, which leads to other group mates having
to cover it up.
Melanie.
You’re late a lot, maybe better planning in the morning could make it look more
professional.
You are an active participant in the project, you know the assignment and help divide the
work tasks.
Stephanie.
Your way of communication could be better. You don’t talk so much so it might be harder
because you don’t like to share your opinion, but you should know that we are interested in
your opinion.
The work that you deliver is very good.
Nora.
You could plan better and be on time.
You deliver what is asked of you, you give your opinion.
Assignment 2:
Received feedback:
From Nora:
Communicating could be better when for example you're too late.
Actively participation and general contribution is good.
You give your opinion and can have a good professional discussion about it, without
reacting on your emotions.
From Melanie:
Way of communicating .
Tel us now how and what, if you’re going to be late.
Active participation.
When you are present you deliver good ideas.
From Stephanie:
The active participation within the group could be better, you sometimes do not go to BC
session and do not notify the group.
When it comes to being on time, there were a few occasions you were later, but most of the
time you are on time.
Your communication could be better, there was once where you just did not let anyone
know if you would come when we had to finish our advice, which lead to us needing to do
more work.
During IB-live week I collaborated with different people to make interview guides, but in the
guest lectures we learned about finances. I feel like I collaborated with the people giving the
guest lectures by being super interactive. (WW6).
Assignment 1:
For our current ethical issue, we chose the world cup in Qatar.
Analyze:
Qatar discriminates LGTBQ+ and women.
The stadium is built by workers that had to work all day without getting a break or water, it
is 35 degrees in Qatar. These conditions are not good and more than 6.000 workers have
passed away.
Assignment 2:
Business dilemma: pay gap between man and women.
I think that both parties should be payed the same if they do the same job.
I think, maybe men get more money because the world looks at it from a perspective that
the man is making the money. So, he has to earn it all. The woman has a working man as
well so they have two streams of income, which means she needs less.
What do you think about the culture shock experience Irem presented? Did you notice any
specific strategies?
The culture shock experience was similar to what I have heard from exchange students.
Assignment 1:
Have you ever lived abroad?
No, I have not lived abroad.
If not yet, what does the idea of living abroad make you feel? Excited? Thrilled? Anxious?
Nervous?
I think it would be very independent, which makes me excited but also nervous and anxious.
Share your plans and preparations for your international experience with your group
members (e.g. Where/when do you want to go? Have you started looking for something
yet?)
I have not started looking and I have no idea.
I think I would stay a bit close by so that my parents can visit and my boyfriend.
I am mostly anxious about my relationship; I see him every week 1-2 times. I’m scared that
we will lose the affection. I spoke to tommy about this before and he said that I probable will
have many more boyfriends, which made my anxiety to lose my now boyfriend much worse.
(This is not Tommy’s fault, so if you read this Tommy, know it’s not your fault. It’s just
anxiety and not wanting to let go).
Assignment 2:
Assignment 3:
Overcoming culture shock
Resources to overcome culture shock:
Take a language course.
Get in touch with people that also live there via social media.
Inform yourself about your health insurance.
This assignment I learned to be creative and innovate on changes in environment and think
of helpful ways to get thru. (WT2).
How might travel/holidays prepare you for living abroad? How might they not prepare you?
When you travel you are away from home, that prepares you. But also, you are not alone, on
your IPE you will be alone.
-Total 30 ECTS
-In-depth or broad subjects free to choose.
-Depends on the subjects the university offers and possibility to.
-Attend classes in different programs.
-Minimal 24 ECTS, re-sit at Avans.
-Less than 24 ECTS, minor must be retaken.
LinkedIn workshop:
During the LinkedIn workshop we were showed how many people use LinkedIn and that 90%
of students from our generation is on LinkedIn. I think of this as a very interesting fact.
The workshop was a lot alike with last years workshop.
LinkedIn is a good way to build a network and find jobs.
Week 16, 12/12/2022-16/12/2022:
I was not present during the session, so I didn’t exchange feedback with my clan but with SPs
from other clans.
I have given them feedback, Samba Bah and Lucy Göler. But I haven’t received my feedback
form back, so it is hard to form questions on that.
