“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”. This quote is from Benjamin
Franklin, an American polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. My
shooting coach told me to analyse this quote for one week on my very first days coming to
the shooting centre. This quote has a significant impact in shaping my mindset today, it
makes me realise the importance of preparation in whatever I plan to do. From the day I live
by the quote, I have never come to class unprepared, which has considerably improved my
study productivity. I know that thorough preparation makes a big difference. People will
always feel good when looking at the successful results of others; however, what they should
look at is the process of preparing for that success. However, “If you can’t describe what you
are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.” (W. Edwards Deming). Take my
shooting journey as an example, when I was new to shooting, I enjoyed watching shooting in
the Olympic Games where the athletes only shot 10 and above (the maximum score for a shot
is 10.9). I was in a rush trying to shoot like them, but my coach told me that I should stop
thinking about the results of my shots and focus 100 percent on the process of completing the
shot. The process starts from the moment when I lift the gun to the second when I finish my
shot. During that process there are many factors such as breath control, aiming, etc that take
me years to master. I joined various shooting competitions but there was no result in the first
two years. My problem was that my heart beat was too high under pressure in the
competition. I started to train to decrease my heart beat per minute by running and
meditating. One year later, I got my first gold medal in the Ho Chi Minh shooting contest for
athletes of all ages in 2020. I learned that it is not easy to be well-prepared so I have to
consider all the factors that can affect the results that I want to achieve to best prepare for it.
In short, I want to say that do not focus too much on the results, but to prepare carefully then
In the next 3 years, I want to be financially independent from my parents. When I graduate
from ISB, I want to get a job with a decent salary no matter what field. The job does not
necessarily need to relate to economics. Because I see myself as a global citizen so I will
I am working three part time jobs now, namely English tutoring so that I am gradually not
dependent on my parents’ financial support. However, next year I will stop doing these jobs
and find a company to do an internship there to learn about the working environment. As I
mentioned in the personal vision statement, I welcome every career prospect even if it is not
related to economics, in order to make it possible for me, I will have to prepare everything in
advance. To be specific, I will need to prepare both soft and hard skills, as well as allowing
myself to take risks to know better what it is like in the real workplace to best prepare myself.

Strengths
My first strength is that I have delayed gratification. Firstly, I hold out now for a
better reward later. I have learned to be focused and patient when doing anything after 6
years practising professional shooting. I try to prioritise things that will benefit me in the
future over things that give me gratification just at a specific moment because I know short-
term benefit or gratification does not last long. “The point is that by forswearing the meagre
joys of immediate gratification you can obtain a significantly more substantial delayed
temptations such as playing video games or going to the pubs. By developing impulse control
and long-term thinking, I can achieve a lot in relationships, career, health as well as finances.
Take financial benefits as an example that delayed gratification brings about. If I delay the
gratification of purchasing things that are not in need, I can earn the long-term reward of
having more savings for the future. To conclude, I will try to further develop my ability to set
goals because I know that success does not come from the work of lazy people. Working hard
does not mean that I just work and study passively, I work proactively and smartly. I am
always trying to be creative, searching for innovative ideas to be more productive in whatever
I do. ”With hardwork and determination, your dreams in life will come through. Nobody will
control you, nobody will tell you to go for mass, classes or even dining; you are no longer
boys, but men, and so you must take your destinies into your hands” (Rev Fr Gideon
Pwakim, 2022). I believe that hard work can help me reach my dreams faster in many ways.
Firstly, hard work really builds my character. People might give up when doing something
difficult; however, giving up is easy but being strong to overcome challenges is hard. I try to
face any problems in life and it has really strengthened me, building me a strong character.
7
Secondly, hard work brings new opportunities for me. By working three part time jobs at the
moment, I have widened my social circle, meeting new people who share with me valuable
experiences. A surprising thing is my second and third students were introduced to me by the
mom of my first student. That all comes from my hard work and I will keep up my good
Weaknesses
Besides strong points, I have also noticed several weaknesses that I need to improve.
Sometimes, I struggle to decide what I should prioritise to do first. It is not about time
management but for me it is about managing the order of things that need to be completed.
“You don't manage time. You manage priorities” (Schachter, H., 2022). When there are
exams coming or projects that require much effort to complete, I am stressed to balance them
with my working time because I do not know what to do now and what to do later. However,
I know that later when I go to work in the office, there are even more tasks and they will not
be completed well if I do not arrange my time properly for them. John Spence once wrote on
his blog "When you know what is important to you, what you are trying to accomplish in
your life, what you truly value, then you simply must have the courage to say 'No' to anything
that does not match your vision of your ideal life." Knowing the meaning of the saying, I will
start organising my schedule clearer, do what matters first so that I can spend my time
smarter.
My second weakness is that I am leading an unhealthy life. These days I stay up late
to finish my work and I also prefer fast food to home cooked food because of its convinience.
I know that in the long-run it will worsen my health and limit myself from working and
studying effectively. Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian political ethicist once said “It is health that
is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”. With a healthy mind and body, I can work
and generate benefits for myself and society. In order to live healthily, I will try to spend part
8
of my time cooking for myself, also finishing my work more efficiently so that I can go to
bed earlier. To conclude that, I believe that I can do and achieve a lot of things if I can change
Opportunities
There are several opportunities that the youth of today including myself have, but they
can all be included in one opportunity. I have the opportunity to create opportunities for
myself. For me, people do not bring opportunities for me but it is my responsibility to do it. It
can be best defined by the phrase self awareness, I am aware that I need to learn and be better
considered a necessary condition for competent social work practice” (Kondrat, M. E., 1999).
This saying emphasises the importance of self-awareness. In addition, I now have free access
to a bunch of information on the internet and also valuable knowledge from my teachers at
ISB, etc. If I take advantage of all those things, I can create opportunities for my future by
being a person with skills and knowledge needed for every job. This really opens a lot of
Threats
Besides noticeable opportunities, there are also threats that can harm me and prevent
me from developing in my career. Firstly, unpredictable illnesses can come up at any time in
my life. There are several causes such as air pollution, water pollution, and harmful pesticides
that can make me sick. “A global epidemic of cancer among people younger than 50 could be
emerging” (Brenda Goodman, CNN, 2022). The number of young people having cancer has
been over the past few decades partly because of unethical activities of businesses and
people. This is a real threat that I have to be concerned about because it is inevitable and I

Conclusion
In summary, while acknowledging that there are strengths and opportunities that I
possess, there are also weaknesses and threats that I need to take into consideration. In the era
where things are constantly changing every second, I commit myself to changing for the
better every day. Above all, I will learn to turn my weaknesses into strengths and threats into
