Scene Reading
As you have experienced throughout my reading and the scenes we have watched,
Shakespeare is meant to be read aloud and heard. To help you understand and practice this you
will be asked to perform a scene reading from Macbeth. A scene reading means choosing a
scene, or a portion of a scene, and thinking about how the characters might move, how they
might speak, all those choices that a play director or actor would make.
Your scene selection should be at least 20 lines in length, you are welcome to work in
groups if you like, but you need to have 20 lines per group member. This means that if you are in
a group of 3, you would choose at least 60 lines for your reading. You do not need to memorize
your scene but should have your scene on a separate page to make notes, of which I can make
I am looking for your ability to understand the important words in the scene and give
them emphasis during your reading, as well for you to have a clear reading voice that shows
practice of your scene (limited tripping over words, especially with elisions).
While your classmates are presenting, you will also be responsible for giving feedback
about the parts that you think they did well. This is meant to alleviate some of the pressures of
presenting and also reflecting on what a good scene reading looks like.
