Class: Math 9 – K&E Topic: Shape and Space – Nets

Date: March 23rd, 2023 Lesson Duration: 85 minutes

Preparation Materials
Make examples of the nets Net blocks
Write questions on board Nets sheet
Photocopy sheets (12) Worksheet
Vocab sheet
Scissors
Glue

Learning Objectives
Students will calculate area of various shapes to determine surface area and volume
Students will create 3-D objects from nets.

General Learning Outcome: Specific Learning Outcomes:

Students will use measurement concepts, 6. estimate, measure and calculate areas of
appropriate tools and results of measurement to quadrilaterals and triangles to solve problems in
solve problems in everyday contexts, including: everyday contexts
perimeter, area, surface area, mass (weight),
volume (capacity), angle measurements.
Students will use visualization and symmetry to 12. classify and construct 3-D objects, using a
extend their awareness of objects and shapes variety of tools and strategies
and solve problems that involve classification
and sketching.

Overview of Lesson
After learning about surface area and volume, students will apply what they’ve been learning to
objects they can physically hold by creating 3-D objects out of nets. This lesson is designed to connect
what they’re learning to real world examples, especially in a K&E program, this is essential to getting
students engaged.

That’s a lot of me talking, so as some of you have
already noticed, you have some shapes on your
tables, with a neighbour, chat about what you think
we’re doing today and why you have those on your Although normally included

Rising Action

5 min Action 1
We’re using nets because it’s easier to measure a 2-D
shape than a 3-D shape. So your task for today is to
find the surface area of each of these shapes. You
need to find the area or each polygon, and then add
them all together.

The faster you finish that, the more time you can
spend actually making the objects and colouring
them.
