Scope and Delimitation

The study was conducted at Trece Martires City from January 2021 – March 2021. This

paper will focus on exploring the perception of the students in tertiary level towards written

corrective feedback; investigating most common errors of the students in writing; and the types

of written corrective feedback received from the teachers. The principle of choosing this type of

corrective feedback is to evaluate whether it is beneficial to the students, as numerous studies

(Cohen & Cavalcanti, 1990; Fathman & Whalley, 1990; Ferris, 1995, 2002; Hyland & Hyland,

2001) show that written feedback is the teachers’ well- known method as a process of responding

and communicating to the students. In addition, this study will assess the response of the students

towards various types teachers’ feedback that might directly affect the impact and effectiveness

of the written feedback provided.

This investigation however disregards other types of error correction feedback

assessments such as oral, peer and computer- mediated and solely focuses on written feedback in

order to give emphasis to the impact alone of the written error correction. Moreover, the research

overlooks other factors such as the relationship that the teacher and the student build that could

affect the result, as the researchers consider only the types of feedback to examine its impact to

the writing development of the student. This study will not intend to validate its connection

between the various theories of learning due to the fact that the researchers view feedback as

interactive process of error correction.

Scope and Limitations

This particular study will attempt to find out the perceived grammatical competence and

attitudes about grammar teaching among Junior High School English teachers in the district of

the municipality of Mendez during the first semester of the S.Y. 2020-2021. The quantitative

method will be used in the study specifically the descriptive-correlational design. A two-part

survey questionnaire which is adopted and adapted will be used to underscore the variables of

the study. Each part corresponds to each variable. Data will be analyzed using descriptive

statistics such as weighted mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics such as the

pearson r.

The study will focus on the perception of the Junior High School English teachers with

regard to grammatical competence. In other words, their actual competence will not be directly

measured. Having them take the actual grammar tests might offend them since they are already

teaching the subject and the researcher would not want animosity between her and her

respondents. Moreover, attitudes about grammar teaching among the respondents will be elicited

using a survey questionnaire. Though it would be best if they would be interviewed so that they

can elaborate their attitudes, the researcher decided not to do an interview anymore since with

the global pandemic we are facing at the moment, this would also be impossible. Likewise, it is

time-consuming given the population of the study.

Since the data will be elicited using survey questionnaires only, the tendency for the

respondents to self-flatter in their answers is apparent. To remedy this, the researcher would seek

the honesty of the respondents in answering the questionnaire and would guarantee them of their

anonymity so that they could freely express themselves in their answers.
