Statement of the problem

This study was designed purposely to find out about the Accounting Student

Engagement and Academic Performance: Does emotional Intelligence interfere? as

perceived by the selected Accounting students in a specific Catholic school from

Cagayan de Oro, school year 2023-2024.

Specifically, it soughts answers to the following questions,

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Year level

2. What are the respondents' assessment/perceptions based from the following

dimensions:

2.1 Student Engagement

● Class Participation

● Major Subjects Academic Tasks Compliance

2.2 Emotional Intelligence

● Self-Awareness

● Self-Management

● Social-Awareness

● Relationship Management
3. What are the results of the respondents’ academic performance based on their

major subject final grades average in the 1st semester of the school year

2023-2024?

4. Is there a significant difference among the respondents' assessment/perceptions

on student engagement, emotional intelligence and academic performance

according to their demographic profile.

5. Is there a significant relationship among the independent, mediating, and

dependent variables:

7. Does Emotional Intelligence interfere between Student Engagement and

Academic Performance?

Hypothesis

Problem 1, 2 and 3 are hypothesis free. On the bases of the problems 4, 5, 6 and

7, the following null hypothesis are tested.

Ho 1

a. There is no significant difference among the respondents'

assessments/perceptions on student engagement, emotional intelligence and

academic performance according to their demographic profile.

Ho 2

a. There is no significant relationship between Student Engagement and Academic

Performance.

b. There is no significant relationship between Student Engagement and Emotional

Intelligence.

c. There is no significant relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Academic

Performance.
Ho 3

a. Student Engagement does not influence Academic Performance.

b. Student Engagement does not influence Emotional Intelligence.

c. Emotional Intelligence does not influence Academic Performance.

Ho 4

a. Emotional Intelligence doesn’t interfere between Student Engagement and

Academic Performance.

Significance of the study

It is believed that the findings of this study is beneficial to the students, the

teachers, the administrators, the parents and the future researchers.

Students. This research study would help them to manage and understand their

emotions, especially towards their academic activities.

Teachers. This study would serve as an approach for them to understand and be aware

of the student's emotional intelligence and its connection to student engagement and

academic performance. Also, this can help them formulate guides for necessary

adjustments that can possibly improve their teaching skills and strategies.
Administrators. This can help them to be more aware of their institution and

stakeholders. Being aware of this particular topic would help them to implement some

actions that can improve and develop their services.

Parents. This can contribute understanding between the parents and their children,

specifically when it comes to their emotional intelligence. Through this, parents will be

able to know how they can support their children to feel more motivated in engaging in

school and improving academic performance.

Future researchers. This study will serve as a guide to the future researchers who

wish to use the data from this paper to further improve and enhance and may be

intending to conduct other studies related to student engagement and academic

performance.

Scope and Limitation

This study was limited to the selected accounting college students from all year

levels in a specific catholic school in Cagayan de Oro during the school year

2023-2024.

The variables of the study to be investigated are the demographic profile of the

respondents, major subject final grades average in the 1st semester of school year

2023-2024 which represents the student’s academic performance, and their

assessments/perceptions that somehow answer if Emotional Intelligence does interfere

between Student Engagement and Academic Performance. The researchers determine

their answer by using the questionnaire as their data gathering tools.


Definition of terms

The following terms are defined operationally and/or conceptually.

Emotional Intelligence. It is defined in this study that emotional intelligence is

the students' capacity to control their personal emotions and of those individuals who

they associate with.

Student Engagement. As what has been defined operationally by the

researchers in this study, student engagement refers to the participation and interest

level that the accounting students are giving towards their academic activities and

learning at school.

Academic Performance. Based on the operational definition of academic

performance in this study, it pertains to the range of the academic achievement that the

accounting students of all year levels in a specific catholic school in Cagayan de Oro

CIty have attained. This will be measured through the accounting students’ major

subject final grades average in the 1st semester of the school year 2023-2024.

Self-Awareness. This means the ability of the accounting students to be aware

of their own emotions and emotional status.

Self-Management. This entails the ability of the accounting students to manage

their own emotions.

Social-Awareness. This is an ability in relation to the accounting students’

awareness of their emotions as social beings.

Relationship Management. This explains how the accounting students manage

their built relationship with others.

Class Participation. This term deals with the act of accounting students in
involving themselves in the class, particularly during class discussions, oral recitations

and so on.

Major Subjects Academic Tasks Compliance. This term talks about the

complying act of the accounting students in their class wherein it includes submissions

of class activity, projects, and assignments.
