Activity 1 - Enumerate the torments, sacrifices or sufferings of Rizal.

In Rizal’s life, he experienced a lot of torments and sufferings from all of his sacrifices
for his family, Filipino people, and for the whole country. This started in Berlin where he wrote
his novel, Noli Me Tangere that resulted a two opposite effectssufferings and freedom.

One of Dr. Jose Rizal’s torments is when he was exiled in a remote town, Dapitan.
Although he is not fully a prisoner and still being productive it still constraints his right of
freedom. But in spite of that, he still offered services to the people in Dapitan such as teaching,
providing health services, and build programs and activities for the people in the town. In terms
of sacrifices, he sacrificed his life for the betterment and development of our country. Some
people love money, fame, glory, etc., but Rizal is different, he loved our country more than
anything else to the point that he even immolate himself by exposing the injustices in the
Philippines. That sacrificed his career that is the fruit of hardwork of his closest brother
Paciano. With that, his sufferings started, from being exiled up to his last homecoming year
1896, where he was brutally tortured after the Spanish authorities improvised evidence against
Rizal. Throughout this time, when the Christmas came, probably his last, he celebrates it alone
and depressed inside a bland and dull prison cell. In addition to that, during his last hours in Fort
Santiago, he was suffering emotionally because of his last moments with his mother and felt
sorry for the pain he will cause to his family. Lastly, his sufferings ended with another suffering
when he was shot dead by the Filipino Firing squad commanded by the gun behind them from
Spanish firing squad.

Other than his sacrifices for Philippine Independence, in his personal romantic life, he
also experience sacrificing when he backed out to his romance with Consuelo Perez to give way
to his friend, Eduardo de Lete’s feelings for the lady. In addition is also sacrificing his love for
Gertrude Beckett in order to fulfil a greater mission. During his time in Dapitan, year 1893, he
learned heartbreaking news about his former romance, Leonor Rivera’s death. But before that,
their break up in 1890 have already caused Rizal’s torment romantically. Due to the death of
Rivera, he found his comfort with Josephine Bracken not until he lost a loved one again, his son
with Josephine, Francisco.

All of his sacrifices, torments, and suffering have come with a great cause and result. That is why
we all know that all of it did not come with him to his grave.

Activity 2 - Directions: Write a poem about Jose Rizal in about 3-4 stanzas of 4 lines in each
stanza.

Jose Rizal, the mirror of heroism and martyrdom

Sacrificed his life for our desired freedom

With his mighty pen and genius mind,

He fought ‘till Filipinos declined their eyes blind

His aspiration to end the colonizer’s tyranny

That concerns the complaints of Filipinos on their litany

He uses his wit and his heart flaming with patriotism

To encourage fellow Filipinos to fight for liberalism

Crisostomo Ibarra himself is bowing to salute his heroic deeds

Standing against the living life Damaso who were the oppressive trees’ seeds

Even though his heart is grieving for the dilemma and hurdle

He did not doubt to revolt— he act fast and not like a turtle

A person only die once, including Pepe—but him is with significance

When that day came at Bagumbayan, the spaniards imposed his unjust penance

We wish he was just like Simoun whom after dying sprang out of darkness and live again

Because we want him to see how his works helped our democracy to be regained
