Etymology/Origin
 Equation - Latin aequare to aequatio means make equal
- English equate, late Middle English equation
 Inequality – Latin inaequalitas, Old French inequalite
- in- “not” + aequalis means not equal

Linear Equation in One Variable

 A mathematical statement which expresses that two algebraic expression
are equal. It is written in the form ax + b = 0, where a and b are real
numbers and x is a variable.
 It is in the first degree or the highest exponent is 1.
 It uses an equal sign.
 It contains only one variable.
Examples:

Linear Inequality in One Variable

 Any mathematical statement relating two quantities using an inequality
sign such as:
greater than > greater than or equal ≥
less than < less than or equal ≤
unequal ≠
 It is in the first degree or the highest exponent is 1.
 It contains only one variable.

Steps: x + 4 = 10
x + 4 – 4 = 10 – 4 subtraction property
x+0=6 perform the operation
x=6 simplify

2. Find the solution of 2x – 8 = 0

Steps: 2x – 8 = 0
2x – 8 + 8 = 0 + 8 addition property
2x + 0 = 8 perform the operation

division property
x=4 simplify
