CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY
A. BACKGROUND
The periodic system of chemical elements is the arrangement of elements based on their
atomic number and similar properties. The periodic system of chemical elements is called the
periodic table, and its function is to find out the atomic number, electron configuration, and
properties of each element. The periodic table shows the chemical elements ordered by atomic
number (number of protons in the nucleus), but arranged in rows (periods) so that elements with
similar chemistry occur in the same vertical column (group). Here, elements with the same
chemical and physical properties are shown by the color categories identified in the key at right.
In general, members of each category also have a similar chemical valency, a measure of the
number of bonds an element can form. Each element is represented by its chemical symbol.
Above the symbol is the element’s atomic number and below is the element’s name. The
periodic table is a useful way of organizing the elements. It arranges the elements in order of
their atomic number, which is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, and is unique to
every element. The table also divides the elements into rows, called “periods”, and columns,
called “groups”. Dmitri Mendeleev, the chemist who devised the table, arranged the elements
based on the similarity of certain physical and chemical properties.

Analysis is defined as a systematic effort to study the subject matter of research by

sorting out or describing the components of the information that has been collected into units of
analysis. Analysis is a research technique aimed at making conclusions by identifying certain
characteristics of messages in a systematic and objective mandatory reference by teachers and
students in the learning process. In general, a book is a written material that presents the
scientific ideas of the author. So, book analysis is a research technique to find out whether a
textbook has good quality or not based on several component references.

B. PURPOSE
Based on the background above, the purpose of making this paper is to analyze concept
labels and chemical representations of the material for the periodic system of elements in class X
SMA/MA chemistry textbooks.

CHAPTER II
CONTENTS
A. BOOK’S ANALYSIS
The analysis was carried out using two high school chemistry textbooks for class X. The
two books were student 1 chemistry textbooks for class X high school/MA written by Endang
Susilowati and Tarti Harjani, published by PT. Wangsa Jatra Lesrai (book A) and a chemistry
textbook for class X SMA and MA written by Budi Utami et al, publisher of CV. HaKa MJ
(book B). In each of these two books, we searched for concept labels, discourse macrostructures,
and chemical representations of the periodic system of elements. The steps for data analysis are:

1 Concept labels in book A and book B are entered into the concept analysis instrument.

2 The macro structure of the discourse contained in book A and book B which has been
collected is then made in the form of a chart according to the instrument made. Then
analyzed and identified the level of elaboration and progress.

3 The chemical representations contained in books A and B are each included in the
instrument label that has been made to then be identified based on the five criteria
(Gkitzia, et al., 2011) by means of a checklist. Then analyzed based on the criteria of
each existing category.

4 The material for the periodic system of elements contained in book A and book B is then
compared with the material for the periodic system of elements contained in the 2013
Curriculum.

Conformity of Concept Labels in Each Book

This study will explain the results and discussion regarding the relationship between the
suitability of concept labels for each book on the material of the periodic system of elements.
The suitability of the concept of the periodic system of elements can be presented in the
following table.

B. Advantages and Disadvantage of Book A and Book B

From the results of the analysis above, it can be seen some of the advantages and
disadvantages of book A and book B, as follows:

Advantages of book A:

1 In book A, there is material on the Relationship Between Electron Configuration and the
Periodic System of the Elements and Periodicity, while in book B there is none.

2 Book A has more complete material because there are only 2 materials from all the label
concepts

3 Book A has a more detailed explanation because it can be seen from the tome that there
are more than book B

4 Using the K13 curriculum

5 There are 2 versions of the book, namely for students and teachers

5
Disadvantages of book A:

1 The material does not complete the concept label

2 There is no Metal and Non Metal Group material

3 Contains more problem solving than explanation

Advantages of book B:

1 Contains a brief but clear explanation

2 There are lots of practice questions

3 There is Metal Group material that is not in book A

4 Using the K13 curriculum

Disadvantages of book B:

1 Images are less attractive because they tend to be colorless or only black and white

2 Less detailed explanation

3 There is no material on the relationship between electron configurations and the periodic
system of elements and periodicity

4 The material does not complete the concept label

CHAPTER III
CLOSING
A. CONCLUSION
Analysis is a research technique aimed at making conclusions by identifying certain
characteristics of messages in a systematic and objective mandatory reference by teachers and
students in the learning process. In general, a book is a written material that presents the
scientific ideas of the author. The analysis was carried out using two high school chemistry
textbooks for class X. The two books were student 1 chemistry textbooks for class X high
school/MA written by Endang Susilowati and Tarti Harjani, published by PT. Wangsa Jatra
Lesrai (book A) and a chemistry textbook for class X SMA and MA written by Budi Utami et al,
publisher of CV. HaKa MJ (book B). The results of the analysis of the concept labels of these
two books are that book A is more complete and more interesting in content than book B as
evidenced by the completeness of the material on the concept labels, the suitability of the
contents, and the curriculum used. While book B has one advantage over book A, namely where
there is Metal Group material that is not in book A.

B. RECOMMENDATION
Suggestions for book authors, it is better to complement the material from the two books
so that the results of the concept label analysis are better. Suggestions for writers to learn more
so that the results of the book analysis are better and more complete so they can produce better
papers in the future.
