These are called “DEMONSTRATIVES”. Demonstratives show or point to people or things.

 SINGULAR PLURAL
THIS THESE NEAR (Close to Speaker)
THAT THOSE FAR (Far from Speaker)

होता है।
✓ THAT AND THOSE => िू र िे एि या एि से अदिि व्यक्तियोों या वस्तुओों िे दिए उपयोग होता
है।

Let’s look at some examples with ‘this’ and ‘that’:

• This is a book. (यह एक ककताब है ।) (The book is near the speaker or in their hand)
• That is a book. (वह एक ककताब है।) (The book is far from the speaker)
• This is a pen. (यह एक कलम है।)
• This is my favorite book. (यह मेरी पसंदीदा ककताब है।)
• That is a girl. (वह एक लड़की है।)
• That girl is my sister. (वह लड़की मेरी बहन है।)
• I like this. (मुझे यह पसंद है।)
• Can you see that? (क्या आप उसे दे ख सकते हैं?)

Let’s look at some examples with ‘these’ and ‘those’:

• These are my friends. (ये मेरे दोस्टत हैं।) (Friends are near the speaker)
• Those are my friends. (वे मेरे दोस्टत हैं।) (Friends are far from the speaker)
• These are pens. (ये कलम हैं।)
• These are my favorite books. (ये मेरी पसंदीदा ककताबें हैं।)
• Those are girls. (वे लड़ककयां हैं।)
• Those girls are my favorite. (वे लड़ककयां मेरी फेवरे ट हैं।)

✓ जब दिसी िा पररचय िराते हैं (When you introduce someone)

For example:
• This is Rohan. (यह रोहन है।)
• This is my friend Rohan. (यह मेरा दोस्टत रोहन है।)
• These are my friends Rohan and Meera. (ये मेरे दोस्टत रोहन और मीरा हैं।) (Not: These
are Rohan and Meera.)
• This is Rohan and this is Meera. (यह रोहन है और यह मीरा है।)
• That is Meera over there. (वहाूँ पर वह मीरा है।)
• Those are my cousins. (वे मेरे चचेरे भाई हैं।)

✓ जब फ़ोन पर बात िरना शुरू िरते हैं (When you begin the conversation on phone)

For example:
• Hello, this is Kanchan. Can I speak to Meera? (नमस्टते, मैं कंचन बोल रही हूँ। क्या मैं मीरा

• Kanchan speaking. Is this Meera? (मैं कंचन बोल रही हूँ। क्या आप मीरा हैं?)

Helping Verbs

• I am from Delhi. (मैं ददल्ली से हूँ।)

• Meera is hungry. (मीरा भखी है।)

• They are not good. (वे अच्छे नहीं हैं।)

• My friends are there. (मेरे लमत्र वहाूँ हैं।)
• Rohan and Meera are coming. (रोहन और मीरा आ रहे हैं।)

• I was with him. (मैं उनके साथ था।)

• She was here. (वह यहाूँ थी।)
• He was my friend. (वह मेरा दोस्टत था।)

• They were not there. (वे वहाूँ नहीं थे।)

• You were there. (आप वहाूँ थे।)
• You were sad. (आप उदास थे।)

• He/She/They will be there. (वह/वे वहाूँ होंगे।)

• I will be here. (मैं यहाूँ रहूँगा।)
• We will be there. (हम वहाूँ होंगे।)
