Predict it!

Particles of a solid, such as sugar.


Particles of a liquid, such as water.

Scientists often use models to explain what is happening. We know everything


is made of particles. The diagrams above show a model for what water and
sugar would look like if we could see the particles they are made of.

Some of these foods are soluble


in water and others are not.

1 Talk to a partner.
Predict whether the
food will dissolve in
water or not. Record
your predictions.

You will need: the foods in the diagram, water, six transparent
cups, six teaspoons
Work in a small group.
1 Half-fill the cups with water and add a teaspoon of each food
stuff to a separate cup of water.
2 Stir each mixture. Observe what happens.
3 Record your results and check to see whether the results match
your predictions.
