Problem#1

Independent random samples were selected from three normally distributed populations with
common (but unknown) variance s2. The data is shown in the table below.
Sample 1 Sample 2 Sample 3
3.1 5.4 1.1
4.3 3.6 0.2
1.2 4.0 3.0
2.9
Test the hypothesis that the population means are equal against the alternative hypothesis that at
least one mean is different from the other two. Use a=0.10

Problem #2
It has been hypothesized that treatment (after casting) of a plastic used in optic lenses will improve
wear. Four different treatments are to be tested. To determine whether any differences in mean
wear exist among treatments, 28 castings from a single formulation of the plastic were made, and
seven castings were assigned to each treatment. Wear was determined by measuring the increase
in “haze” after 200 cycles of abrasion (with better wear indicated by small increases). The data is
listed below.
Treatment
A B C D
9.16 11.95 11.47 11.35
13.29 15.15 9.54 8.73
12.07 14.75 11.26 10.00

12.32 13.47 15.05 12.45
11.78 13.06 14.86 12.38
Is there evidence of a difference in mean wear among the four treatments? Use a=0.05

Problem#3
Casts of aluminum were subjected to four standard heat treatments and their tensile strengths
were measured. Five meaurements were taken on each treatment, with the results (in 1,000 psi)
shown below.

Treatment
A B C D
35 41 42 31
31 40 49 32
40 43 45 30
36 39 47 32
32 45 48 34

Perform an analysis of variance. Do the mean tensile strengths differ from treatment to
treatment, at the 5% significance level?
