Site area 390,000 m²
Retail space 230,000 m²

HISTORY

The mall was designed and built by Triple Five Group, owned by the Ghermezian brothers of Canada, who also own
the biggest shopping mall in North America, the West Edmonton Mall. Mall of America is on the past site
of Metropolitan Stadium, where the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins played until the Hubert H. Humphrey
Metrodome opened. The teams left Metropolitan Stadium in 1982. A plaque in the amusement park is where home plate
used to be in that stadium. One seat from Met Stadium was placed in Mall of America at its exact location (including
elevation) in the stadium, to recognize a 520 foot home run hit by hall-of-famer Harmon Killebrew on June 3, 1967.
The mall opened its doors to the public August 11, 1992. Even before opening, Mall of America had earned several
nicknames, including "The Megamall", "Sprawl of America", "Hugedale" (in reference to the four major "Dale"
shopping malls within the Twin Cities, Rosedale, Southdale, Ridgedale and Brookdale) and, simply, "The Mall".
It became the second largest shopping mall in total area and largest in total store vendors in the United States when it
opened, however, the mall has never been the largest in the world .

The mall is nearly symmetric, with a roughly

rectangular floor plan. More than 530 stores
are arranged along three levels of pedestrian
walkways on the sides of the rectangle, with a
fourth level on the east side. Four
anchor department stores are located at the
corners. The mall is organized into four
different zones. Each of those zones had its
own decorative style.

Green Initiatives

• Mall of America is committed to sustainable energy initiatives through best operational practices,
cutting edge technology and long term investments.
• MOA does not use a central heating system; instead, 70 degrees is maintained year-round with
passive solar energy from 1.2 miles of skylights and heat generated from lighting, store fixtures
and body heat
• More than 30,000 live plants and 300 live trees act as natural air purifiers within MOA
• Completing the largest LED parking garage lighting conversion in the nation reduced electrical
consumption by 7 million KWH annually
• MOA recycles more than 60% of its waste—an average of 32,000 tons per year
• MOA recycles more than 2,400 tons of food waste to a local hog farm, which feeds more than 1
million hog meals annually
• MOA converts the fat from restaurant fryers into more than 4,000 pounds of biodiesel per month—
enough fuel for a 53-foot semi-truck to travel from New York to Los Angeles five times
• MOA has more than 275 water-efficient toilets that save over 1.4 million gallons of water a year
• Grand New Entrance to Mall of America includes a state-of-the-art electrochromic glass skylight
which adds to the esthetics of the building and results in substantial energy savings
