infection. Let us start with knowing what
infection is.”

“Delos Reyes, kindly read the definition “INFECTION is a condition in which

of infection please.” pathogens, such as bacteria and
viruses, enter the body and multiply.
This process causes symptoms of a
disease. It can spread from one living

“So, based from its definition,

INFECTION happens when what?” “When bacteria or viruses enter the
body and multiply.”
“Exactly!”

“When pathogens, such as bacteria and

viruses have the opportunity to enter
your body and have the chance to
multiply, they cause symptoms of a
disease, and when that happens, you
will be considered what?” “Sick, Sir!”

“Very good!”

“When that happens, you will be

“When a person is infected or sick, the (Students listen attentively to the

INCUBATION. It is the period starting
from the entry of the pathogen until the
appearance of the first sign. For
example: chicken pox, it takes 2-3
weeks of incubation. For common cold,
1-2 days of incubation, influenza takes
1-3 days and 15-18 days for mumps.”

“The second stage is called the

PRODROMAL stage which starts from
the onset of non-specific signs and
symptoms such as fever.”

“The third stage is called the ILLNESS

stage which begins when more specific
signs and symptoms appear. For
example: common cold is characterized
by sore throat, sinus congestion, rhinitis,
mumps manifested by ear ache, high
fever, and salivary gland swelling.”

“The last stage of infection is called the

CONVALESCENCE stage which is an
interval when acute symptoms of
infection disappear. The length of
recovery depends on the severity of
infection and the sick person’s general
state of health. Recovery may take
several days to months.”

“Well, let’s see.”

“What are the stages of infection?” “The stages of infection are incubation,
prodromal, illness, and
convalescence.”
“Alright. There are four stages of
infection, the first stage is called
incubation, the second stage is called
prodromal, the third stage is called
illness, and the last stage is called
convalescence.”

“Why is it important to know and be “It is important to know and be aware

infection from developing any further
“Exactly!” when we are sick.”

“Knowing or being aware on the stages

of infection is very important because it
provide us knowledge and ideas on how
to prevent infection from developing any
further when we are sick, and also for us
to come up with appropriate actions to
prevent the spread of infections and
diseases.”

“Why do you think people get infected, “Because they are not aware of the

“That is why this lesson about stages of
