Transmission Hydraulic Control Valves

SMCS - 3167-11; 3167-12; 3167-15

Remove Transmission Hydraulic Control Valves

start by:

a) remove engine, torque converter and transmission

b) separation of transmission from torque converter

1. Remove bolts (1) and cover (2) from the transmission. Remove gasket from the cover.

2. Remove bolts (3) and manifold (4) from the transmission housing. Remove O-ring seal from the
manifold.

3. Remove bolt (6) and retainer (7). Remove small tube (5) and O-ring seal. Slide large tube (8) back.

4. Remove two tubes (9) and O-ring seals from the transmission case.

5. Remove four bolts (10) from the transmission control valve pack.

6. Install tool (B) on the valve pack as shown. Fasten a hoist to tool (B) and remove the transmission
control valves (11). Weight of the valve pack is 75 lb. (34 kg).

7. Remove springs (12), bolts (14), then remove shaft assemblies (13) from the transmission case.
Remove washers (15) and retainers from the shaft assemblies.

8. Remove bolts (16), nuts (18), then remove detent assemblies (17) from the transmission case.

9. Remove shafts (19) and bearings (20) from the detent assemblies.

10. Remove seals (22) and bearings (21) from the transmission case with tool group (A).

Install Transmission Hydraulic Control Valves

1. Install bearings and seals in the transmission case with tool (A). Install the seals in the case with the
lips toward the bearings.

2. Install bearings (2) and shafts (1) in the detent assemblies.

3. Install detent assemblies (4) and the bolts (3) and nuts that hold the assemblies to the transmission
case.

4. Install shaft assemblies (6), cams (5) and bolts that hold the cams to the shafts. Install washer (7)
and retainer (8) on the shafts. Connect springs to the shaft assemblies and detent assemblies.

5. Install tool (B) on the control valve pack, then fasten a hoist to tool (B). Put the transmission
control valve pack (9) in position in the transmission case and install the four bolts that hold it.

6. Install O-ring seals (10) on tubes and then install tubes (11) as shown in valve pack manifold.

7. Install O-ring seals (13) on tubes. Install tubes (12) in the control valve pack as shown. Install
retainer (17) and bolt (16) on the tubes.

8. Install O-ring seal (15) on manifold (14). Install manifold (14) on the transmission case with the
bolts that hold it.

9. Install a new gasket on the transmission cover (18). Install the transmission cover on the
transmission case with the bolts that hold it.

a) connection of transmission to torque converter

1. Remove bolts (1), then remove pressure control valve (2).

2. Remove bolts (3), then remove cover (4) from the pressure control valve.

3. Remove piston (5), two springs (7), valve spool assembly (6), plug (8) and slug (9).

4. Remove snap ring (10), retainer (13), spring (11), plunger (14), retainer (12) and shims (15) from
valve spool (6).

5. Remove stop (16), two springs (18), washer (17) and valve spool (19) from the pressure control
valve.

6. Remove valve spool (20), spring (22) and slug (21) from the pressure control valve.

7. Turn pressure control valve around and remove bolts (23) and cover (24).

8. Remove plug (25) and valve spool (26) from the pressure control valve.

9. Remove manifold (27) from the selector control valve group.

NOTE: Make an identification of the selector control valves spools and their respective bores.

10. Remove selector control valve (28) from the manifold (29).

11. Remove O-ring seal (30) from the selector control valve. Remove two selector control valve
spools (31) from the selector control valve body.

Assemble Transmission Hydraulic Control Valves

1. Install a new O-ring seal (2) on the selector control valve body. Install two selector valve spools (1)
in the valve body.

2. Install selector control valve (3) on manifold (4).

3. Install manifold (5) on the selector control valve body.

4. Install valve spool (7) and plug (6) in the pressure control valve body.

5. Install cover (9) and the bolts (8) that hold it on the pressure control valve body. Tighten the bolts
to a torque of 22 ± 3 lb.ft. (28 ± 4 N·m).

6. Turn the pressure control valve body around. Install slug (11), spring (12) and valve spool (10) in
the pressure control valve body.

7. Install valve spool (16), washer (14), two springs (13) and stop (15) in the pressure control valve
body.

8. Install shims (23) on valve spool (19) with retainer (20).

9. Install plunger (22), spring (18), retainer (21) and snap ring (17) in valve spool (19).

10. Install slug (27), plug (26), valve spool assembly (19), two springs (25) and piston (24) in the
pressure control valve body.

11. Install new O-ring seals (29) on cover (28), then install cover (28) on pressure control valve body
with the bolts that hold it. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 22 ± 3 lb.ft. (28 ± 4 N·m).

12. Install pressure control valve (30) on the manifold with the bolts that hold it.

13. Make adjustments to the transmission hydraulic controls after the transmission is installed in the
machine. See POWER SHIFT TRANSMISSION TESTING AND ADJUSTING.
