a. Use the following random numbers to create a simple random sample of 6 students. Work from
left to right along the top row of numbers, then similarly along subsequent rows.

2. The houses in a street are numbered from 1 to 200. Use the random numbers in question 2 to select a
random sample of 5 houses (write down the house numbers).

House 1: 26
House 2: 190
House 3: 77
House 4: 69
House 5: 03

3. A biologist plants 100 seeds in pots numbered from 1 to 100. Describe how to create a systematic
sample of size:

a. 5 (Also, list the numbers of the pots you would include):

Interval = Population / Sample
= 100/ 5
= 20
We will have to select every 20th pot from the pots.
Numbers will be: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100.

b. 25 (Also, list the numbers of the pots you would include):

Interval = Population / Sample

= 100 / 25
= 4
We will have to draw every 4th number from the pots.
Number will be: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92,
96, 100.

4. A graduate student is conducting a study among LUMS students and is considering several options to
obtain a sample. In each case below, state the name of the type of sampling design that (s)he is
considering.

a. The student posts sign-up sheets around campus, asking for participants in the study. The
sampling design is Convenience sampling ( Voluntary )

b. The student decides to divide students based on their ages, obtaining a sample of randomly
selected students in each of the age categories “younger than 25”, “between 25 and 35”, “older
than 35”. The sampling design is Stratified Random Sampling.

c. The student obtains a numbered list of all students from the Registrar’s Office and used a random
number generator to select 100 students from this list. The sampling design is Simple Random
Sampling.

5. What is the difference between a quota sample and a stratified sample?

Quota Sampling Stratified Sampling

group to reach a certain level of representation  It is representative of the sample as individuals

(to fulfill quota requirements). are selected randomly.
 It is not representative of the sample as data is
selected in a non-random way.
