Random Sampling

Name : Section:

Test I. Identify the type of sampling technique used by the researcher in each of the following situations:
Simple random sampling, systematic random sampling, stratified random sampling, or cluster random
sampling.
____________ 1. Each student at a school has a student identification number. Counselors have a
computer generate 50 random identification numbers and those students are
ask to take a survey.
_____________2. A teachers puts students' names in a hat and chooses without looking to get a sample
of students.
_____________3. A student council surveys 100 students by getting random samples of 25 freshmen, 25
sophomores, 25 juniors, and 25 seniors.
_____________4. An airline company wants to survey its customers one day, so they randomly select 5
flights that day and survey every passenger on those flights.
_____________5.A principal takes an alphabetized list of student names and picks a random starting
point. Every 20th, start superscript, start text, t, h, end text, end superscript
student is selected to take a survey.
Test – II. Solve the following problems. (Answer item number 1 and 2 below and item number 3 at the
back)
1. A researcher wants to study the effects of social media on Grade 11 students in Manila Mathematics
High School. He wishes to use the simple random sampling technique in choosing the members of his
sample. If there are 1,000 Grade 11 students in the school, how many students should there be in his
sample?
2. A researcher wants to select 35 people from a population of 150. How is she going to do it by using
the systematic sampling technique? List the first 5 students to be chosen as respondents with 3 as the
random start.
3. A researcher would like to investigate the perception of students of Mathematics. He divided the
population into sub-populations as shown below. Use stratified random sampling if the sample to be
drawn consists of 500 students.

from each age group.
