Loads on Piping System & Basic Load Cases

There are two types of loads which acts on piping system

a. Static load
b. Dynamic loads

Static loads – Weight & Pressure, hydrostatic load, Thermal loads, Loads due to
Settlement.

Dynamic loads – Seismic, Wind, Slug-force, PSV-force, Water hammer & Vibration.
Basic Load Cases considered in Piping Stress Analysis
1. Hydrostatic Loading case
Hydrostatic loading condition – WW+HP
WW- Weight filled weight, HP- Hydrotest pressure

2. Operating Loading case

Operating loading condition – W+T1+P1
W- Dead weight of the system, T1- Max. design temperature, P1- Max. design pressure

3. Sustained Loading case (Induce primary stresses)

Sustained loading condition – W+P1 (temperature independent) takes ambient
temperature. (W+P1+Ta) only weight of pipe & design pressure considered
W- Dead weight of the system, P1- Max. design pressure, Ta- Ambient temperature

4. Expansion Loading case (Induce Secondary stresses)

Expansion loading condition – (W+T1+P1) - (W+P1)
(Temperature dependent) only temperature of pipe considered in this case
W- Dead weight of the system, T1- Max. design temperature, P1- Max. design pressure
DISCUSSION 8 03-12-2022

Actual working of expansion load case as follows

(W+T1+P1) - (W+P1) which means (W+T1+P1-W-P1- Ta)
Expansion case = (T1- Ta)

Note:
Primary stresses (Sustained stresses) which are developed by the imposed loading.
• Primary stresses are not self- limiting
• Following lists are the loads which induced primary stresses:
• Pressure
• Weight

Secondary stresses are developed by the constraint of displacements

• These displacements can be caused either by thermal expansion or by imposed
restraint and anchor point movements
• Secondary stresses are self-limiting
