The role of ICT in enhancing language teaching and learning :

What is ICT:

Information and communication technologies (ICT) refer to all electronic means of transmitting,
processing, storing, creating, displaying, sharing or exchanging information.

Although the use of computers and the internet in teaching foreign languages has been a
controversial topic, it is now widely accepted that it has a positive impact on the learning process.

The use of ICT in language learning has evolved over time to better meet the specific needs of
learners, with computer-assisted language learning (CALL) providing a range of applications that boost
motivation and offer other benefits. Additionally, the internet and hypermedia provide valuable
resources for both teachers and learners.

Use of ICT in English teaching and learning English language:

 The introduction of ICT has brought about significant changes in the way English is taught.
 ICT can be used in English Language Teaching (ELT) to cover all four language skills: reading,
writing, speaking, and listening.
 The use of multimedia texts in the classroom can help learners become familiar with vocabulary
and language structures.
 Using multimedia texts in the classroom familiarizes learners with vocabulary and language
structures.
 Technology can be used to create both independent and collaborative learning environments
when teaching English.
 Websites can be a useful internet technology for facilitating the teaching and learning of English
language, particularly in large classes.

Advantages of using ICT in language learning and teaching:

 The use of technology enables teachers to share more information with a greater number of
students in a shorter amount of time.
 Technology can inspire teachers and learners to explore new and innovative ways of teaching
and learning.
 Technology allows for a learner-centered approach in teaching and learning, particularly in the
field of business.
 The use of technology can enhance learners' autonomy and encourage self-directed learning.
 Technology provides students with a platform to easily share their responses and ideas.
 The use of technology can increase learners' motivation, social interaction, and engagement in
the learning process.

Disadvantages of using ICT in English learning- teaching:

 The use of ICT in language learning can lead to a shorter attention span among students due to
information overload and the availability of open sources.
 Online learning may not provide students with the opportunity for genuine human interaction,
including the non-verbal aspects of language and communication.

 Students may be tempted to open unnecessary websites to play games or watch movies during
their online learning sessions.
 Effective use of ICT in language learning requires a high level of self-discipline and self-direction
from students.
 The use of ICT tools in teaching and learning requires good infrastructure and properly trained
personnel.
 Communication among learners during language learning using ICT tools can be a source of
distraction.

Why is it important to integrate ICT in language learning and teaching?

 Teachers worldwide may have concerns about integrating technology into their teaching and
learning processes, fearing that technology may overshadow pedagogy. However, technology is
innovative, popular, and has the potential to revolutionize the way we think about teaching and
learning.
 Technology is continuously evolving and is increasingly integrated into various teaching
methods. Its impact can be observed on three levels: what we teach, how we teach, and where
we teach. The ICT capability should be measured by investigating, communicating, and creating
with technology.
 An effective teacher today is a transformative teacher who can integrate different technologies
effectively into their curriculum, whether it is traditional, transitional, or transformational.

However, effectively integrating technology into the classroom is not a simple process. Teachers must
acquire a specific type of knowledge, which we call technological pedagogical and content knowledge
(TPCK).

Lee SHULMAN supports the idea of TPCK and believes that quality teaching depends on the
transformation of three knowledge bases: technological, pedagogical, and content. Since many
technologies were not initially designed for educational purposes, they may need to be repurposed
using the SAMR model.

The SAMR model consists of four steps: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition.
Substitution and Augmentation are considered "Enhancement" steps, while Modification and
Redefinition are "Transformation" steps. This is similar to the difference between adding seasoning to
an old family recipe (enhancement) and creating an entirely new, original dish (transformation).

PROJRCT BASED LEARNING APPROACH:

The 20th century Italian educator and physician Maria Montessori suggested that in a well-fostered and
prepared environment, children are able to teach themselves, and self-direct their learning. Nearly a
half-century later, in the 1960s, what we now know as PBL was formally developed.

1. Significant content:
The project must be meaningful and fulfill educational purpose. The project must be:
 Learning objectives based
 Well designed
 Well implemented
2. A need to know:
Students engage better with relevant and authentic learning Materials
3. A driving question:
A good question captures the heart of the project which gives students a sense of purpose and
challenge. It could be:
 Abstract
 Concrete
 Problem solving focused
4. Students voice and choice:
This element is key in terms of making a project feel meaningful to students. The more voice
and choice the better.
5. 21st century skills:
A project should give students opportunities to build up 21st century skills such as:
 Collaboration
 Communication
 Critical thinking
 Creativity
 Use of technology
6. Inquiry and innovation:
Students find project work more meaningful if they conduct real inquiry.
7. Feedback and revision:
Familiarizing a process for feedback and revision during a project makes learning meaningful.
Students need to learn:
 First attempts do not result in high quality
 Revision is a frequent feature of real world work
8. A publicly presented product:
Schoolwork is more meaningful when extended beyond the teachers or traditional tests. When
students present their work to real world audience it becomes authentic.
