design requirements
𝐴𝑠𝑣 0.4𝑏𝑣
1. minimum links should be provided [clause 6.1.2.5 / 9.2.2]: =
𝑠𝑣 𝑚𝑖𝑛
0.87𝑓𝑦𝑣
in this equation 0.4 is modified as
𝑁
0.4 × 𝑓𝑐𝑢 /40 2/3 if 40 < 𝑓𝑐𝑢 ≤ 80 𝑚𝑚2
• by equating 𝐴𝑠𝑣 𝑣 − 𝑣𝑐 𝑏𝑣 0.4𝑏𝑣 𝑁
= = → 𝑣 − 𝑣𝑐 = 0.4
𝑠𝑣 0.87𝑓𝑦𝑣 0.87𝑓𝑦𝑣 𝑚𝑚2
𝑁
• indicates the minimum links at least provide a design shear resistance of 0.4 𝑚𝑚2 →
𝑁
therefore, the value of 𝑣𝑟 = 0.4 𝑚𝑚2 is considered as the required minimum design
shear resistance of links

reason for proving minimum links:

• when web reinforcement is provided, it remains unstressed until diagonal cracking
occurs → if the amount of web reinforcement is too small, the sudden stress increase
may cause instant yielding of these reinforcing bars

3
shear, bond and torsion
shear strength of beams with shear reinforcement

design requirements

2. maximum shear stress [HKConcrete2013: clause 6.1.2.5]:

the design shear stress 𝑣 should always
𝑉 𝑁
𝑣= ≤ min 0.8 𝑓𝑐𝑢 , 7
𝑏𝑣 𝑑 𝑚𝑚2
• whatever shear reinforcement is provided
(an allowance for 𝛾𝑚 = 1.25 has been included)

reason for limiting maximum shear stress:

𝑁
• 7 𝑚𝑚2 is considered as the maximum design value
of the shear force that can be sustained by the member

• this upper limit prevents crashing of the concrete in the direction of the maximum
principal compressive stresses, i.e. crashing of the compression strut of the concrete

𝑉 𝑁
• if the design shear stress 𝑣 = 𝑏 > 𝑚𝑖𝑛 0.8 𝑓𝑐𝑢 , 7 𝑚𝑚2 →
𝑣𝑑
dimensions of the cross-section should be increased
4
shear, bond and torsion

design requirements

3. maximum spacing of links [HKConcrete2013: clause 9.2.2]:

in the direction of span, 𝑠𝑣,𝑚𝑎𝑥 should not be larger than 𝑑 → take

𝑠𝑣 ≤ 0.75𝑑

reason for limiting maximum spacing of links: 𝑑

• this condition ensures that at least one stirrup
intercepts one diagonal crack 𝑑
(according to the 45° truss model)

4. form and area of shear reinforcement in beams

[HKConcrete2013: clause 6.1.2.5, Table 3.2-2]

note 1:
while minimum links
should be provided in
all beams of structural
importance, it will be
satisfactory to omit
them in members of
minor structural
importance such as
lintels or where the
maximum design
1
shear stress is < 2 𝑣𝑐

4. form and area of shear reinforcement in beams

[HKConcrete2013: clause 6.1.2.5, Table 3.2-2] note 2:
minimum links provide a design
shear stress of 𝑣𝑟 where
𝑁 𝑁
𝑣𝑟 = 0.4 for 𝑓𝑐𝑢 ≤ 40 or

enhanced shear strength

of sections close to supports
the shear causing
failure is that acting • shear failure at sections of beams without
on section X-X shear reinforcement will normally occur on
a plane inclined at an angle of about 30° to
the horizontal

• if the angle of failure plane is forced to be

inclined more steeply due to the load or
because the section where the shear is to
be checked (eg section X-X in the fig) is
close to a support→ the shear force
required to produce failure is increased →
𝑣
i.e. these sections have an enhanced
shear failure near supports shear resistance

enhanced shear strength

of sections close to supports
the shear causing
failure is that acting
• within a distance of 2𝑑 from the face of a
on section X-X
support or a concentrated load, the design
concrete shear stress may be increased from
2𝑑
𝑣𝑐 to 𝑎 𝑣𝑐 , provided that the shear stress 𝑣
𝑣
at the face of the support remains
𝑁
𝑣 < min 0.8 𝑓𝑐𝑢 , 7
𝑚𝑚2

• the enhanced shear strength may be taken

𝑣 into account in design of sections,
in particular beams with concentrated loads
near a support, or with corbels and pile capes

9
shear, bond and torsion
shear strength of beams with shear reinforcement

enhanced shear strength of

sections close to supports
• one of the possible reasons:
sections close to supports have an enhanced shear
resistance partly owing to the induced diagonal
compressive stresses in concrete from the concentrated
reaction, which helps to resist shear→ in such case, the
shear span to depth ratio is generally small

• for design, a simplified approach [Clause 6.1.2.5(i)]

is used to consider the enhanced shear strength of
sections close to supports

• take a nominal section which is

at a distance 𝑑 from the face of the support
