DAY 1
Activity No. 19
ATP-ADP Cycle
I. OBJECTIVES
Cells require constant supply of energy and use energy-rich molecule, Adenosine Triphosphate
(ATP), to perform nearly all of its activities. This explains why ATP is tagged as the energy currency of
the cell.
In addition, each ATP is made up of a sugar ribose, a nitrogen-containing base adenine, and a chain
of three phosphate groups. The energy is released when the bond between the second and third phosphate
is broken by addition of a water molecule in the process called hydrolysis, a molecule of inorganic
phosphate leaves the ATP, which then becomes Adenosine diphosphate or ADP.
The repetitive breakdown and regeneration of ATP is known as the ATP-ADP cycle. In this activity,
you will look into the structure of ATP and trace the phases of ATP-ADP cycle.

D. Fill-in the blanks to complete the narration about ATP. Use the keywords in the box below.
The ATP-ADP (1)____________is one of the most important processes among living things.
It occurs in the powerhouse organelle called (2) _____________ present in (3)_____________cells.
ATP is the primary (4)____________molecules for all (5)____________. In other words, everything
alive depends on (6)____________for energy, from the simplest single-celled organism,
(7)____________to the most complex organism in the Kingdom (8)____________.
Think of ATP as a (9)____________ battery, while its sister molecules, (10)____________ is the
same battery but (11)____________ in charge due to its missing P or (12)____________ group.
There is a need for a sufficient supply of energy from (13)____________ obtained from the
food we eat. Third phosphate will(14)_____________ to (15)____________ and make source of
energy available to the body. We can compare it to (16) ____________ currency of the Philippines .
If you have U.S. dollar, it has value, but local businesses and stores won’t accept that method of
3
payment. You need to first take the foreign currency to a bank (17)(____________) to exchange it for
Philippine Peso (18) (____________).

VI. GENERALIZATION
VII. APPLICATION
While you are in a vacation in Bohol, one summer night, you join in a group firefly watching
tour by a boat in Abatan River, where you witness diverse fireflies are glowing briefly in the dark.
Make an inference if producing this light requires energy? If so, where might the energy come from?
