4. 1 Engage The teacher calls someone from the class to define volcano.
Student: Volcano is a vent in the earth’s crust through which lava, volcanic ask, and gases
(10 minutes) escape.

PICTURE C
Student A: The volcano A is broader and shorter compared to the other two volcanoes.
Student B: Volcano B has a bowl shaped crater which looks like a funnel
Student C: Volcano C is the Mayon Volcano which has a perfect cone shape and is
symmetrical. It’s the tallest among all the volcanoes in the picture.

volcano. The Shield, Cinder Cone and the Composite or Stratovolcano.
The teacher gives 5 minutes for the students to read the descriptions of three types of
volcanoes. After which, the teacher divides the class into 6 groups.

Explain what happens when volcanoes erupt S9ES-IIIb-28
Competency/ies:
1.Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
Knowledge: enumerate the different hazards caused by active volcanoes
Skills: create an essay on the effects of these hazards to our health and to the environment
Attitudes: displays awareness on the exposure to these hazards
Values: Determination to finish tasks

4. 1 Engage LET’S PLAY! (WORD SCRAMBLE)
Teacher: This game is a review of previous discussion. I will divide the class into 6 groups.
(10 minutes) Each group will receive 5 different envelopes. These envelopes has scrambled words inside
which you need to arrange according to what is being described in the statement provided in
the envelope. The first group who can finish first with the correct answer will be the winner.
Are you ready?
1. An opening in the earth's crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases escape.
Answer: volcano
2. It refers to the molten rock that flows over the surface, building layer upon layer until
a volcano is formed.
Answer: lava
3. A semi-molten rock which tries to escape upward through spaces between plates
toward cooler areas on the crust.
Answer: magma
4. This type of volcano has a viscous lava resulting to a more explosive and more
dangerous eruption.
Answer: stratovolcano
5. They have no record of eruption and they don’t have magma supply.
Answer: extinct volcano
4.2 Explore
(10 minutes) The teacher lets the students watch short video on how volcanoes are formed and erupt.
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQwZwKS9RPs
4.3 Explain
(15 minutes) The teacher asks the students to provide their understanding about the video presented by
answering these following questions:
4.4 Elaborate The teacher further explains the cause of volcanic formation and eruption.
(10 minutes) Volcanoes erupt when molten rock called magma rises to the surface. Magma is formed
when the earth’s mantle melts. Melting may happen where tectonic plates are pulling apart
or where one plate is pushed down under another. Magma is lighter than rock so rises
towards the Earth’s surface.

Sta. Rita, Asturias, Cebu
4.2 Explore The teacher asks these following questions during the recap:
(10 minutes) 1. What are the three types of volcano?
- Shield, Cinder Cone, Stratovolcano
2. Which of the tree volcanoes have high viscosity?
- Shield Volcano
3. Which of the tree volcanoes has a symmetrical slope? Which has a steep slope?
Which has a low slope?
- Stratovolcano
- Cinder cone
- Shield volcano
4. Which of the three is the most explosive?
- stratovolcano
5. Differentiate magma from lava.
- Magma is a semi-molten rock that is underground while lava is a molten rock
that breaks through the Earth’s surface.
6. Can you enumerate the hazards of an active volcano?
- Lava dome, lava flow, blast, pyroclastic flow, pyroclastic surge, tephra falls,
gases, and tsunami
4.3 Explain
(15 minutes) The teacher provides further explanation about student’s answers.
