4. 1 Engage The teacher calls someone from the class to define volcano.
Student: Volcano is a vent in the earth’s crust through which lava, volcanic ask, and gases
(10 minutes) escape.

Teacher: Can you name a volcano here in the Philippines?

Student: Mayon Volcano, Taal Volcano, Mt. Pinatubo, Mt. Apo
Teacher: Great job! Now I want you to observe the three pictures on screen and describe
each volcano as shown.

PICTURE A

PICTURE C

Student A: The volcano A is broader and shorter compared to the other two volcanoes.
Student B: Volcano B has a bowl shaped crater which looks like a funnel
Student C: Volcano C is the Mayon Volcano which has a perfect cone shape and is
symmetrical. It’s the tallest among all the volcanoes in the picture.

Teacher: Perfect! All of you got a point. In this lesson, we will dig deeper on the three types of
volcano. The Shield, Cinder Cone and the Composite or Stratovolcano.

Learning
Explain what happens when volcanoes erupt S9ES-IIIb-28
Competency/ies:

1.Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
Knowledge: enumerate the different hazards caused by active volcanoes
Skills: create an essay on the effects of these hazards to our health and to the environment
Attitudes: displays awareness on the exposure to these hazards
Values: Determination to finish tasks
2. Content/Topic Hazards Posted by Active Volcanoes
3.Learning

4.Procedures (indicate the steps you will undertake to teach the lesson and indicate the no. of minutes each step
will consume)
4. 1 Engage LET’S PLAY! (WORD SCRAMBLE)
Teacher: This game is a review of previous discussion. I will divide the class into 6 groups.
(10 minutes) Each group will receive 5 different envelopes. These envelopes has scrambled words inside
which you need to arrange according to what is being described in the statement provided in
the envelope. The first group who can finish first with the correct answer will be the winner.
Are you ready?

Students: Yes, we are!

1. An opening in the earth's crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases escape.
Answer: volcano
2. It refers to the molten rock that flows over the surface, building layer upon layer until
a volcano is formed.
Answer: lava
3. A semi-molten rock which tries to escape upward through spaces between plates
toward cooler areas on the crust.
Answer: magma
4. This type of volcano has a viscous lava resulting to a more explosive and more
dangerous eruption.
Answer: stratovolcano
5. They have no record of eruption and they don’t have magma supply.
Answer: extinct volcano

4.2 Explore
(10 minutes) The teacher lets the students watch short video on how volcanoes are formed and erupt.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQwZwKS9RPs

4.3 Explain
(15 minutes) The teacher asks the students to provide their understanding about the video presented by
answering these following questions:

1. How are volcanoes formed?

Student: Volcanoes are formed because of subduction.
2. Why do they erupt?
Student: Volcanoes erupt when molten rock called magma rises to the surface

4.4 Elaborate  The teacher further explains the cause of volcanic formation and eruption.
(10 minutes) Volcanoes erupt when molten rock called magma rises to the surface. Magma is formed
when the earth’s mantle melts. Melting may happen where tectonic plates are pulling apart
or where one plate is pushed down under another. Magma is lighter than rock so rises
towards the Earth’s surface.

 The teacher discusses the different hazards of active volcanoes.

HAZARDS POST BY ACTIVE VOLCANOES:

 Blasts
 dome growth
 gases
 lahar
 lava flow
 pyroclastic flow
 pyroclastic surges
 tephra falls
 tsunami

ESSAY

Directions: In a ½ CW, answer the given question in 3-5 sentences.

4.5 Evaluate
What are the effects of the substances produced by a volcano to our body and to the

environment?
