• A transformer is a type of static
electrical equipment that transforms
electrical energy (from primary side
windings) to magnetic energy (in
transformer magnetic core) and
again to the electrical energy (on the
secondary transformer side).
• A transformer is a type of static electrical equipment that
transforms electrical energy (from primary side windings) to
magnetic energy (in transformer magnetic core) and again to
the electrical energy (on the secondary transformer side).

• An electrical transformer’s working

principle is “Mutual Induction”, which
states: a uniform current variation in a
coil will produce an E.M.F in the other
coil, which is inductively linked to the
first coil.
• Two coils with high mutual inductance
• A step-down transformer is a type of
transformer that converts the high
voltage (HV) and low current from the
primary side of the transformer to the
low voltage (LV) and high current value
on the secondary side of the
transformer.
• The reverse of this is known as a step-up
transformer
• A step-down transformer is a type of transformer that
converts the high voltage (HV) and low current from the
primary side of the transformer to the low voltage (LV) an
high current value on the secondary side of the
transformer.
• The reverse of this is known as a step-up transformer

• A step-down transformer has a lesser

amount of turns on secondary to
make a low voltage and more turns
on primary to resist high voltage
levels of the AC supply.

This type of Step Down

one primary winding and a
center split in the secondary
winding, by which it gives the
output voltage with the center
pint.

This type of Step Down
Transformers have multiple
tapping in Secondary coil.
Multiple Tapping are used
to get the desired varied
output with secondary
coils.

The magnetic field around a
current carrying primary
induces emf in the
secondary winding. The
voltage in the primary and
induced in secondary are
connected by a formula.
Np>Ns to work transformer
as "Step-Down
Transformer".

Ns = Vs
as "Step-Down Transformer".
Np Vp

VpNs = VsNp
Let's understand by Ns = Vs
considering the situation of Np
Step-Down Transformer in
Vp
which the secondary turns [Ns]
are 250, primary turns [Np] are
5000 and the input voltage [Vp]
is 240. Then the voltage at the
secondary [Vs] can be
calculated by using the
formula:
REARRANGE:
Hence, the voltage at the
secondary winding of the
Vs = Ns x Vp transformer is 12V, which is less
Np than that at the primary
winding. Therefore, the
= 250 x 240
transformer in said to be a
5000 Step-Down Transformer.
= 12v
We can use step-down transformers in:

• In main adapters and charges for cell phones, stereos

and CD players

• In welding machines by reducing voltage and increasing

current

• In televisions, voltage stabilizers, inverters, etc.

• To step down the voltage in transmission line
