Maintenance works/Items for Culverts

Parapet/Handrail/Crash Barrier

1-2) If Paint is damaged or not painted, it as to be painted/whitewash.

3-4) If any post or railing is damaged/lost it shall be replaced/repaired.

5-6) If connection/Joints are poor, it shall be repaired/tightened.


If railing/parapet is damaged more than 50% length, it shall be replaced with new railing/parapet along with

painting works..
9-10) To be provided with New Parapet/Handrail/Crash Barrier along with painting works.

11-12) Plastering work shall be done on parapet along with painting works

Protection works

13-14) If protection works are in fair condition, it shall be retained with routine maintenance.
If damaged partially like poor bonding between the materials, it shall be repaired by compacting, cleaning

vegetation etc.
If partial scouring is observed i.e. less than 30cm thick, it shall be repaired by providing approach protection
17-18)
at scoured locations.
If damage is severe like scouring >30 cm thick and more than 50% of its volume eroded it shall be protected
19-20)
by providing new approach protections.
If side slope protection is severally damaged i.e. more than 50% of its volume eroded it shall be provided
21-22)
with new side slope protection.
21A-22A) Guide walls to be provided on either side along the stream.

23-24) If Chute and catch pit is partially damaged i.e. <50% it as to be repaired.

25-26) If Chute and catch pit is severally damaged i.e. >50% it as to be replaced.

27-28) Protection works to be provided for flat terrain

29-30) Protection works to be provided for hilly terrain

Head Wall

31-32) If Headwall is partially damaged i.e. <50% it as to be repaired/plastering.

33-34) If Headwall is severally damaged i.e. >50% it as to be replaced.

35-36) To be provided with New Headwall.

Vegetation

37) Shall be cleaned/cleared.

Culvert vent Opening Choked


Chocked/Partially chocked culvert shall be cleaned and maintained with regular maintenance. After cleaning
38) the chocked culvert vent, it as to be inspected inside the vent thoroughly and if found any defects it shall be
repaired/rehabilitate.
Slab/Pipe/Return wall/ Wing wall/ Abutments/ Side walls

39) If spalling is observed, it as to be repaired/treated with high strength non-shrink cementitious grout.

If reinforcement bars are visible it shall be wire brushed, cleaned and treated with anticorrosion coating and

the exposed surface to be patched up with high strength non-shrink cementitious grout.

41) If cracks are observed it as to be treated with Non-shrink cementitious grout.

42) If pipe is severely damaged and has lost it shape/alignment, it shall be replaced with new Pipe.
If structure element is severely damaged and has lost it shape/alignment, it shall be replaced with new
43) structure element. If abutment or box or portal type structures are damaged as above i.e. beyond repair it
shall be recommended for reconstruction of culvert.
44-45) Plastering work shall be done on Return wall/ Wing wall/ Abutments/ Side walls.

46) New parapet /crash barrier shall be provided on approaches along with painting works.

47) New floor protection works with rigid apron shall be provided at culvert location.
S. No Maintenance works/Items for Bridges

1 Wearing coat shall be removed and replaced, if worn out.

2 The damaged hand rails shall be replaced with new MS rails

3 Approach parapets shall be repaired or replaced with W-Beam crash barrier.

4 Drainage spouts with down take pipes shall be provided.

5 Expansion Joint shall be repaired.

5A Expansion Joint shall be replaced.

6 Bearings shall be serviced.

6A Bearings shall be replaced.

Polymer Modified Repair Mortar over leached, honey combed and spalled concrete surface and exposed

steel reinforcement shall be provided.

8 All Structural Connections shall be checked and weak joints shall be strengthened.

Chip off loose concrete or delaminated concrete or honey combed concrete till sound concrete surface is

encountered without causing Structural Damage to the Girder / Slab / Diaphragms / pier cap.

10 Apply suitable Polymer Bond coat or Epoxy bonding to ensure bond between old and new concrete.

11 Apply suitable corrosion inhibitors as per specification.

12 Shotcrete/ Guniting/ Grouting or polymer concrete shall be applied to the cleaned surface.

13 Epoxy based protective coatings shall be provided for all steel surfaces.

Safety measures such as Rumble strips / Road humps / Sign Boards shall be provided on either side of

bridge to slow down the moving traffic over the bridge.

15 De-rust the surface of the exposed reinforcement.

16 Clean the surface of the sound concrete with wire brush or alternative by sand blasting

17 Pointing of damaged portion of Masonry walls.

18 Plastering of damaged portions of the kerb/parapet.

19 Marking/Painting of kerb/parapet, Bridge No. & Span Arrangement.

20 Vegetation growth on approaches to be cleared.

21 Stone pitching for slope protection shall be provided.

21A Guide wall/retaining wall shall be provided.

22 Seepage/water leakage shall be sealed with passing polyurethane grouting injection system

Settlement of backfill is considered on approach slab at the back of parapet to keep the road surface flat

even if backfill settlement occurs

24 General cleaning of Stream bed, road surface, approaches and others elements

25 Plastering works shall be provided for Return wall/ Wing wall/ Abutments/ Side walls

26 Approach slab shall be repaired /replaced/or provided

27 New parapet/ Hand Rail/ Crash barrier shall be provided along with painting works

28 Floor protection works shall be provided at bridge location.


29 Protection works shall be provided around foundation of Abutments/Piers
