Philippine history is very important to us. It helps us to understand our identity and it can lead us to
know what really happened to our ancestor’s long time ago. They said that history is the tail of our true
identity. It’s really important to us to know our history and study all the important events in our country
long time ago. Thanks to our ancestor who fought for their life just to give us the freedom that we all
want from the hand of colonizer. And thanks to all of our national heroes who sacrificed their lives and
died for our freedom.

The first thing that came to my mind when I hear the word ‘Philippine history’ is our National hero Dr.
Jose P. Rizal. He dedicated his life and make a book to wake the Filipino’s mind to change their mind and
finally to fight the colonizers. He published a book “El Filibusterismo” to dedicate it to the three martyr
priests that died from the hands of the Spaniards because they are against to them. When Jose Rizal
heard about it when he was young, he suddenly wakes his mind and wants to fight for their rights and
freedom from the Spaniards. He wrote a book “El Filibusterismo” to target the Spanish government in
indirect way to show the evil and cruel sides of the Spaniards. It also tackles the bravery of the Filipino
community and it shows our countrymen fighting the greediness and cruelty of the Spaniards. And aside
from ‘El Filibusterismo’, He also wrote “Noli Me Tangere” to defend our fellow Filipino people from
accusations of foolish and lack of knowledge. The book contains on how the Filipino people life’s during
the Spanish colonial period. It also contains on how you must believe in our churches and priest at that
time. It shows that you must follow the church rule that you need to obey.

We can understand each of them since our nation has a rich cultural and historical heritage. We know
that the Filipinos used their own writing system called baybayin before the Spanish conquest. As a
component of our identity, history has taught us about the various ethnic groups in the Philippines and
their cultures. Our rich culture is a result of Spanish and American colonization. We were introduced to
Catholicism by the Spaniards, and today, 86% of Filipinos identify as Roman Catholic. History reveals our
past selves, which shape who we are today. Studying Philippine history also has the benefit of inspiring
us with the greatness of the people who liberated us from colonizers. Their tales exhort us to embody
our best selves for the good of the nation.
