If we think in depth, it is indeed a waste of time and resources if a

students’ learning couldn’t put into use and make a considerable
impact on themselves or in the community, hence the lessons must be
contextualized. Real circumstances of the students and in the
community they live in must be used to connect the lesson being
discussed so that it becomes relevant and the learnings becomes
useful.

Like for example… A teacher in history or AP ask us to

memorized the dates and persons who are…..

What is really the or how do we connect it in real life???

The textbook: Araling Panlipunan

Araling Panlipunan’s fundamental concepts are the people and

community according to the Department of Education (DepEd). People
affect the community, likewise community affects the people. The
curriculum wants citizens who observe and examine what’s happening
around them and values historical and societal matters which mold
them to become wise in making decisions and act according to those
decisions. Further, it aspires to develop Filipinos that at all times
pursue in favor of the environment, and humanitarian act. Araling
Panlipunan cultivates critical thinking and skills for research,
interpretation of information, communication while conforming to
standard of ethics.

Continue development provides livelihood to the people and pushes

advancement of technology that result to exhaust of natural resource
at the same time pollute the environment. All of these somehow
contribute to what the world is facing now, the global warming. Global
warming is one of the most discussed environmental problems of
today because the detrimental damages it could inflict to the whole
life system on earth. Sea level rise, melting of ice particularly in South
and North poles and increase in temperature are among the impacts
of global warming according to National Geographic. In the
Philippines, manifestation of global warming are periods of La Niña
(excessive rain) and El Niño (drought), and coral bleaching across the
country. Coral reefs serve as food and habitat for coral reef fishes.
Reefs also protect the shore from strong and big waves. Learning
about environmental issues like industrialization, deforestation and
pollution are not new since I remember taking them up when I was in
elementary. Education about global warming was not relevant before
but with increasing threat and vast scope of the problem, this
generation needs to learn about global warming as they are the ones
and their children who will grievously suffer in the future if not
resolved or minimized.

I believe that topic “Mga Isyung Pangkapaligiran ng Bansa” is

appropriate and relevant for the fourth grade students in Agdangan,
Quezon as global warming affects the livelihood by majority of locales
which are fishing and farming. Stronger typhoons and drought
damage farms while coral bleaching and extreme temperature upset
sector of fisheries. I believe that the young can help spread awareness
to their families and old relatives regarding the effects of global
warming to crops and fish productivity. This would help them adjust
strategies to profit and support their families, more so to the
contribution to alleviate global warming like planting trees and
garbage management early on – prevention is better than cure .  That
is why the lesson must be in the context of agriculture and fisheries
which are familiar to students and the community.

Contextualization of lesson “Mga Isyung Pangkapaligiran ng

Bansa”

Objectives

1. To know the different environmental issues that can be observed in

the locality.
2. To identify the root causes of these issues.
3. To find ways how to contribute and help resolve the issues.

Activities for each objective

1. Through recitation and use of chalkboard, the students will list down
the environmental issues based on the reading, in their multi-media
account and from the news and actual observation in the community.

Columns will be provided for each category. Though the students can
include those from what they’ve read and sourced out from the news,
the activity will focus more on the actual issues they can observed
within the community.
 As a continuation of the first activity, students will draw the root
causes of each issues.

When done, the class will one-by-one examine if the list and the
drawings correctly corresponds to the list and if not, students will make
necessary changes.

 The students will group themselves into 4-5 and make a role play on
what students like them and the community can do to contribute in
resolving the problems or issues.

After every play, the rest of the class will identify what is being acted by
the group and critic if they are applicable to the locality or not.

Insights after doing FMA 2

The difficulty of students in putting what they’ve learned at school to

application may be attributed to lack of contextualization of lessons.
One can be readily understood the lesson if he/she can relate to the
examples given or matters discussed. The study of Araling Panlipunan
itself abridges the gap between concepts and application since the
topics being discussed are actual issues in the Philippines like
industrialization, deforestation, pollution and global warming,
however, different areas may experience different effects thereof.
Students in the upland may be familiar with deforestation without
worrying about industrialization, pollution and global warming
because buildings and garbage are scarce and minimal. They couldn’t
feel an increased temperature either because weather in the upland is
generally cold. On the other hand, deforestation may not be an issue
to residents in coastal areas but get disturbed by dumps of garbage
accumulated by the shore after hit by a typhoon. They may also notice
coral reef bleaching or death of corals due to extreme temperature
brought by global warming. The difficulty of students in putting what
they’ve learned at school to application may be attributed to lack of

Study of the environmental issues namely, industrialization, pollution

and deforestation has long been included in Araling Panlipunan,
hence, I think that Filipinos are already familiar with them. Study of
global warming on the other hand is essential not only in the
Philippines but in the Municipality of Agdangan since agriculture and
fishing, their major source of livelihood are vulnerable to drought and
typhoons. Learning must revolve around these context in order for the
topic global warming relevant to the locales. Learning from this not
only imparts caution about the negative impacts of the issue but also
actions that would mitigate global warming.
