What is Humanities?
 Latin word “Humanus” = “human, refined, cultured”
 Academic disciplines that study the expression of human beings
o What it means to be human
 Man should be humanized, socialized & educated for positive response to rapid
changes

What is Art?
 Latin word “Ars” = “ability or skills”
 A creative and imaginative activity
o Expressive arrangement of elements with the presence of a medium and
technique

What is Art Appreciation?


 BEING ABLE to LOOK at a Work of Art and then BEING ABLE to FORM an
OPINION of the work.
o knowledge, background and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities
that comprises all work of ART.

What is a “Work of Art”?


 Activity that involves both imagination and skills.
 It is a record of an artist’s view.

Drawing)
 Plastic Arts – three dimensional; physical manipulation of medium (ex.
Molding, Sculpting, Architecture)

o Involvement of speech, movement, and gestures

 We create things to serve our practical purposes.
 We make things that are pleasing to the eye or ear.
 Art works are also valuable sources of inspiration and aesthetic experience.
 Through the artist’s work, we also get a glimpse of the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of
the people in their time and the forces in their environment that influenced their artwork.
 Out of the aesthetic experiences we derive from the arts, we may be influenced to change
our ways: transform us into highly cultured, dignified, and respectable human beings.
 The arts may beautify our humanity.
