I. Introduction
Molds are microscopic fungi that live on plant or animal matter. They can be found indoors and outdoors
and are part of our natural environment. They play an important role in the environment by breaking down
and digesting organic material. Also called fungi or mildew, molds are neither plants nor animals; they are
part of the kingdom Fungi.
Molds can multiply by producing microscopic spores similar to the seeds produced by plants. Many spores
are so small they easily float through the air and can be carried for great distances by even the gentlest
breezes.
Molds come in many colors including white. "Black mold" is not a species or specific kind of mold, and
neither is "toxic mold." Sometimes the news media use the terms "toxic mold" and "black mold" to refer to
molds that may produce mycotoxins or for a specific mold, Stachybotrys chartarum. Molds that produce
mycotoxins are often referred to as toxigenic fungi.
Mold is not usually a problem indoors -- unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin
growing. As molds grow they digest whatever they are growing on. Unchecked mold growth can damage
buildings and furnishings; molds can rot wood, damage drywall, and eventually cause structural damage to
buildings. Mold can cause cosmetic damage, such as stains, to furnishings. The potential human health
effects of mold are also a concern. It is important, therefore, to prevent mold from growing indoors.

A. Statement of the problem:

This mold growth research attempts to measure the mold's growth rate at various temperatures and to
establish which temperatures will prevent the mold from developing. This will specifically discover
answers to the following questions:
a. What happens when you put mold in a room temperature?
b. At what temperature does the mold grow the fastest?

B. Objectives:
a. To figure out which temperature will prevent mold growth.
b. To identify the temperature which could speed the spread of the mold.
c. to identify what temperature is appropriate to store food.

Null hypothesis:
There is no change in mold development rate between temperatures.

II. Experimentation:

A.Materials Used
• 3 slices of lumpia wrapper
• 3 sealable plastic bags
• 1pc of film or clear plastic with a 10x10cm grid drawn onto it
• Cotton buds
• Clean knife
• Chopping board
• Sticky labels
• Marker pen
• Mold spores (if available inside the house)
• Mask
• Gloves

1. .Using the sticky labels and the marker pen label bags. Mark 3 bags as 'A', 'B', and 'C'.

2. Cut the lumpia wrapper into 10x1p cm squares using the chopping board and knife.

3. Inoculate the lumpia wrapper thoroughly with the mold solution. Try to coat each slice with a similar
amount of the culture although this can be difficult. (If you don't have any mild at hand it will take
some time before the mold will manifest to your material.)

4. Put one slice of this lumpia wrapper into each bag and seal the bag tightly.

5. Put the 'A' bag into the refrigerator- freezer, the 'B' bag into the refrigerator- vegetable storage and the
'C' bag somewhere fridge will not be getting much light it is best to cover the 'C' bags to make sure that
the light is a constant.

6. Every 24 hours, preferably at exactly the same time everyday, using the plastic grid, count the number
of square centimeters of mold on each sclice of lumpia wrapper. If the mold covers more than half a
square, count it as 1 cm, if less than half a square, count as 0 cm. You must nevr open he bags.

7. You shoukd repeat these counting processes for 10 days or until there are significant measurable result.

8. Keep a careful note of your results for each slice of lumpia wraper for the entire duration of the
experiment. You can even take pictures or draw the slices if you want to be really scientific!

9. Average the results for sample types A,B, and C.

10. Once you have finished, throw out all of the bags without opening them.

IV.Result:
A. Discussion/Conclusion:
We learn about the nature of molds in this experiment. We determined the rate of mold development at
various temperatures and discovered the solution to specific questions about how to store food. Therefore, I
conclude that room temperature would probably speeds up mold development, while the right temperature
to keep food or the temperature that will prevent mold growth is lower temperature.

B.Application:
The results of this study can be applied in our daily life. It really matters for us, especially our mothers who
like cooking, to understand how to avoid it from ruining our delicious meals.
