b. Analysis and Discussion added Ma’am.
SUFFIX is added after the rootword Ma’am.
What is a rootword or base word?

What is a suffix?
We are going to use the suffixes –ful and –
less to add in the rootword.

Look at these words again.

1. Playful
2. Handful
3. Powerful
4. Plentiful
5. Spoonful
6. Colourful The common in each word are the syllables
7. Hopeless ful and less Ma’am.
8. Useless
The rootwords are play, hand, power,
What do these words have in common? plenty, spoon and colour Ma’am.

What are the rootwords that has a syllable The rootwords are hope and use Ma’am.
–ful?

What are the rootwordsthat has a syllable

-less?

SUFFIX MEANING
-ful full of
-less without
.
The suffix –ful oten means “full of”; if you are
handful, you are full of hand; if it is colorful,
it is full of color and if you are poweful, you
are full of power.
The suffix –less means “ without”. If you are
hopeless, you do not have hope (without
hope). If it is useless, there is no use.

There’s also the rules on adding suffixes –ful

and –less .
RULES EXAMPLES
Foor rootword Faith+ -ful= Faithful
ending in any Fear+less=Fearless
letter except y,
the suffix –ful and
–less is simply
added.
For rootword Beauty+ -
ending in y, ful=Beautiful
change y to i and penny+less=pennyless
add the suffix –ful
and less.

Suffixes –ful and –less are also often used

with the same words to form opposite. For
example, COLORFUL means full of color and
COLORLESS means without color. They are
opposite because of the suffixes –ful and –
less added in the word. .But this is not always
true. For example, A person with a home is
not “homeful.”
