Over the course of the semester we looked at designing, developing, quantifying and
rating an Elemental Estimate. Briefly outline how the quantification of an elemental
estimate is different to that of a full Bill of Quantities and give an example.

Part A (15 Marks)

In an Elemental Estimate, the summary sheet should include a rate per m² of GIFA
for each element of the project. Briefly outline the importance for a Quantity Surveyor
(QS) of establishing a rate per m² of GIFA and how the result can be used to give the
QS confidence in their estimated cost.

Part B (10 Marks)

Also, discuss how this GIFA cost information can be useful for future estimates and
outline how this information can be used.

building. Briefly describe what ‘Whole Life Costing’ is and what basket of items would
need to be considered in order carry out a review of the Whole Life Cost of a
building.
