In his essay, "The Life of Jose Rizal," Dr. Jose Rizal wrote about his life and the events that influenced his decisions. He explained how
he became a doctor and why he decided to go to Spain. He also described how he had to leave his country because of his beliefs.
Rizal's essay begins with the date of his birth, December 30, 1861. He mentions that he was born in Biñan, Laguna, and that he was
the third child born to an educated family. The family was poor and did not have much food or money but they were happy because
they had a son who would become a doctor when he grew up. They wanted him to study hard so he could get an education and make
them proud of him. Rizal's father wanted him to be educated as well so he sent him to study at a private school where most students
came from wealthy families and were taught by teachers from Spain who had studied there before coming back home. At this school,
Rizal learned English so that he could read more books than other students who only spoke Tagalog (the language spoken in the
Philippines). He also learned other subiects like mathematics and science. After graduation, Rizal returned home to teach history and
geography at Ateneo de Manila University until 1887 when he went abroad to Europe and studied medicine at Paris University under
distinguished professors like Pierre Pachet (Hernandez).
