Reflection/Journal Entry
(Learner-Centered Teaching Philosophy)

Since the 21st century, leaders of education have been pushing teachers towards the
application of learner-centered philosophies to form formidable learners. These learners
are expected to survive in a real-world setting and contribute meaningfully to building a
greater nation.
There are several learner-centered philosophies that I practice inside my classes such
as progressivism, social reconstructionism, and existentialism. I simply cannot rely on just
one principle for my class is a great example of dynamism. Every day, I see to it that I apply
varying strategies to engage my learners with great interest.
For progressivism, John Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) and John Dewey (1859-1952)
are the founding minds. Reading their takes on education is vital for the effective education
of learners in the current generation. Through group activities, the learners are encouraged
to interact and discover ways to solve problems.
When it comes to social reconstructionism, debates and case studies are avenues for
learners to come up with strategies to battle social problems in a controlled situation. For
example, the learners may form groups and determine fail-safe ways to discourage other
learners from committing racism or bullying.
As for existentialism, learners are given the chance to promote their personal
character, beliefs, and choices. This principle helps with localizing the learning material
closer to the learners’ life and environment. What they learn becomes relevant to their
actual living.
It is not easy to teach learners who have differing learning styles and views in life,
however, I am confident in providing them with the avenue to express their best selves and
learn in the best ways possible.
