Assignment 1: Enumerate and define all common disasters either natural or human-made.

Disaster- “a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society at any scale due to
hazardous events interacting with conditions of exposure, vulnerability and capacity, leading to
one or more of the following: human, material, economic and environmental losses and
impacts.” (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction [UNISDR], 2017).

Natural Disaster- caused by natural or environmental forces.


 Earthquake- a weak to violent shaking of the ground brought on by the abrupt shifting
of subsurface rock elements.
 Flood- a temporary rise of the water level.
 Volcanic Eruption- the sudden occurrence of a violent discharge of steam and volcanic
material.
 Storm/Hurricane- a severe tropical storm with high winds and heavy rain.
 Tsunami- an extremely large wave caused by a violent movement of the earth under the
sea.

Man-Made or Anthropogenic (Human-generated)- caused by human and their activities.


 Terrorism- unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to coerce a
government in furtherance of political or social objectives.
 Chemical spills- inadvertent release of a liquid chemical regarded as hazardous to human
health.
 Radiological Events (Nuclear)- situations involving a radiation exposure from a
radioactive source.
 Fire Incidents- tragic occurrences that lead to destruction of property and devastating
burn injuries.
 Transportation Accidents- injuries sustained during the operation of personal and
commercial motor vehicles, bicycles, trams, and motorbikes.
