Students will be able to solve addition equations using different strategies and explain why they
Learning Target used the strategy that they did.

- Fluently add multi digit whole numbers, using an algorithm or another strategy (supports

Warm up
- “Welcome back from lunch, join me on the carpet please. You need your math notebooks
and please sit next to your math partners.”
Introduction to - go over what we will be doing today, read the learning target
Lesson - I will then have the students complete the warm up problem.
(10 mins)
- “Great job completing the warm up everyone, I was really able to see you thinking.”
- Review the three addition strategies we have been learning about.
Whole group

Guided Practice - “Today we will be using the math boards. We are going to go over our math board
(20 mins) expectations and then I will read the question outloud and hand out cards. Do not go to
your group until I say.’
- Go over math board expectations
- Read question to class (accommodation)
- Hand out cards
- “First listen then do”
- “When I say you are going to head to your groups and solve the equations. I am going to
set a timer for 10 minutes, once the timer goes off, wait for the next instructions. If you
finish before the 10 minutes are up, complete problem 2.”
- “Go ahead and begin”
- While the students are working I will be walking around looking at the different strategies
they used.
- Once the 10 minutes are up, we will carousel to see everyones boards and head back to
the carpet.
- “What did you notice while you were walking around?”
- “Group one, why did you choose the two strategies you did?
- Ask all the groups this same question
- “What strategies did we see the most?”
- “What strategies did we see the least?”
- “Why do you think that is?”
- They should come to the conclusion that all of these strategies are helpful in finding the
sum to an addition equation and one way might be easier then another for them.

- “First listen, then do”

- pass out worksheet now, “take one and pass”
- “You are now going to be working on a worksheet with your math partners. You are first
going to be solving the addition equation using the standard algorithm and then you can
solve it in a different way. This way can be different from your partners. Lastly, you will be
writing why you chose to use this strategy. Make sure you are talking about this with your
partner! If you are working on the floor make sure you grab a clipboard.”
Independent - “Ok, go ahead and start working.”
Practice - While the students are working, I will be walking around the room helping different
(15-20 mins)
groups.
- If I see a few groups struggling I might pull a small group to the carpet so we can work
through the problems together and I can answer any questions that they might have.
(accommodation)

- “Give me five”

strategies we used and why. Don't forget to work on your math homework tonight to

(5 mins) away and get ready for recess.”

them into a small group to help. I will read the question out loud.
