I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
1. Explain how earthquake intensity is determined,
2. discuss how the magnitude of an earthquake is measured and,
3. Differentiate Mercalli scale from Richter scale and Moment Magnitude scale.

III. TEACHING STRATEGIES

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminaries

“Let us all stand and put ourselves in the

presence of our Lord. In the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.”
(Prayers)

“Good afternoon, class!” “Good afternoon, Ma'am!”

“Before you take your seat kindly pick up the liters

of paper on the floor and arrange your chairs
properly.”

“You may now take your seat. Thank you very

much!”

“How are you today my dear students?” “We’re doing great, Ma’am!”

‘’Our class monitor, _____. Is there any absentees “No one is absent for today, Ma’am”
for today?”

“Great, I`m happy that all of you are present

today.”

“Alright, before we proceed to our new topic, let’s

have a review first!”
Identify what is asked in each slide.

1. It is the shaking of the Earth crust that occurs “Earthquake”

naturally or by human activities.

2. They are geophysicists who are experts in the “Seismologists”

study of earthquakes.

3. It is an elastic wave generated by an earthquake “Seismic Waves”

or an explosion.

4. These are the types of Earthquake Waves “Body Waves and Surface Waves”

5. The body waves are seismic waves that travel “Body Waves”
through the interior of the Earth.

6. These are the fastest kind of seismic waves, “Primary Waves or P-Waves”
traveling about 6 to 7km, and consequently, the
first to arrive at a seismic station and recorded in
the seismograph.

7. They can only travel through solids and they “Secondary Waves or S- Waves”
cannot pass through liquids.

8. These waves are also known as transverse or “S-waves”

shear waves, which create the shaking of the
ground back and forth perpendicular to the
direction the waves are moving.

9. Seismic waves that travel along the Earth’s “Surface Waves”

surface.

“Amazing!”

“It’s good to know that you can still recall the

things that we have discussed last meeting.”

“Before we proceed to our class discussion, let me

present to you our learning objectives for today.”

“Kindly read _____.” At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. Explain how earthquake intensity is determined,
2. discuss how the magnitude of an earthquake is
measured and,
3. Differentiate Mercalli scale from Richter scale
and Moment Magnitude scale.
“Thank you very much. Class these are the
learning objectives that are expected for you to
attain at the end of our class discussion.”

B. Motivation

“To start our day with fun, let’s have a game and
this game is entitled ”Word Jumble!”
“In this game, you will be divided into two groups.
Each group will have a representative to arrange
the words according to the given definition. The
group with the highest point will receive a prize.”

“Seismogram”

“Intensity”

“Earthquake”

“Richter Scale”

“Magnitude”

“Amplitude”
“Epicenter”

“Focus”

“Modified Mercalli Scale”

“Moment Magnitude Scale”

“Is that clear class?”

“Yes, Ma’am.”
“Thank you very much!”

“Before you take your seat kindly read the word

that you have formed.”

“Great Job!”

“Congratulations everyone! You did a great job in

our first activity. Did you enjoy it?” “Yes, Ma’am!”

C. Activity

“Let us continue the fun and learning with our next

activity. And our activity is entitled
“The Seismograph!”
