Students' Academic Performance

Background and Rationale

Due to the pandemic, our daily lives changed, and the way we communicate with
others. Social media has become the number one way for people to communicate with each
other. Students can also use it for their studies, etc. But there are also some disadvantages of
using social media, some students neglect their education due to their addiction to social media
including FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE, TIKTOK, and other social media platforms. Actually, social
media plays a significant role when it comes to communication needs. Social media enables us
to stay in touch with those we love, even when they live far away, it also helps the students to
communicate with their peers. Students benefit greatly from social media since it allows them to
study more and share resources for further learning.

Nonetheless, social media can affect us, particularly students. The excessive use of social
media by students may have an impact on both their academic performance and mental health.
As you are aware, there are advantages and disadvantages to anything. The excessive usage
of social media by students causes them to lose concentration on their academic work because
they are only thinking about using social media. It is important for students to find a balance
between social media use and academic responsibilities. The study reveals that time spent on
social media and excessive usage of social media negatively impacts students' academic
performance. The high use of social media has been shown to worsen feelings of low self-
esteem, loneliness and stress, while increasing rates of depression, anxiety, substance misuse,
and suicidality. Educators and parents can play a role in promoting healthy social media habits
and encouraging students to prioritize their academic goals.

This study will examine how excessive social media use affects academic performance,
focusing in particular on Gardner College students who are more likely to engage in it due to
their lack of knowledge about how to set limits on it and the fact that the majority of parents do
not restrict their kids' use of it.
