Investigating the effects of Social Media use on the Well-being of Senior High School in Capul Agro

Industrial School.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Human being are social creatures that require the companionship of other to make progress in life.
Thus being socially connect with other people can relieve stress, anxiety, and sadness, but lack of social
connection can pose serious risks of mental health.

The impact of social media use on the well-being on individuals has become a topic of increasing interest
in recent years. As social media platform have become more widespread and integrated into our daily
lives, concerns have arisen about the potential negative effects they may have on mental health,
relationship, and self-esteem.

Studies have suggested that excessive social media use can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety,
depression, and a decress in overall life satisfaction. Additionally, the constant comparison to others'
carefully curated social media profiles may contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

As a researchers' our observation to the students of Senior High School in Capul Agro Industrial School
they give more importance to social media instead of their studies. Social Media is a major source of
distraction for students, especially when they're trying to focus to listen to their teacher, doing group
activities or other important tasks, they use always their phones even when they are in the class. That's
why nowadays the students have no manner because the influence of social media but not all students
are like that, even if they are addicted to social media, they still paying attention and focusing on their
studies.

On the other hand, social media can also have positive effects, such as providing a sense of community
and support, connecting people with similar interests and backgrounds, and providing a platform for
self-expression and creativity.

Research in this area continues to evolve, as scientist and phycologists seek to better understand the
complex relationship between social media use and well-being.

Another background for investigating the effects of social media use on well-being is the increasing
reliance on social media as a primary mode of communication and information sharing. With the
widespread use of smartphones and other mobile devices, social media has become a convenient and
efficient way for people to stay connected with friends and family, stay informed about current events,
and express themselves to a wider audience.
However, concerns have been raised about the potential negative impact of social media on mental
health and well-being, particularly among vulnerable populations such as adolescents and young adults.
Studies have suggested that excessive social media use may contribute to feelings of social isolation,
depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Additionally, the constant exposure to idealized and often
unrealistic images and messages on social media can lead to negative comparisons and a distroted sense
of self worth.

At the same time, social media has also been credited with facilitating social support and providing a
platform for positive self-expression and community building. Researchers continue to explore the
complex relationship between social media use and well-being in order to better understand the
potential benefits and risks associated with this technology.

Particularly relevant area of research due to the high rates of social media use among this population.
Students are often heavy users of social media platforms, and as such, may be more susceptible to the
potential negative effects associated with excessive use.

Research has shown that social media use can have both positive and negative effects on the well-being
of students. On the positive side, social media can provide opportunities for social support and
connection, as well as a platform for self-expression and creativity. It can also facilitate access to
information and resources, which can be particularly useful for students who may be seeking academic
or career-related information.

However, studies have also suggested that excessive social media use can lead to negative outcomes
such as anxiety, depression, poor academic performance, and decreased overall life satisfaction.
Additionally, students who are already vulnerable, such as those with pre-existing mental health
conditions, may be at an increased risk for negative outcomes associated with social media use.

Given the widespread use of social media among students and the potential risks associated with
excessive use, understanding the impact of social media on student well-being is an important area of
research.

Social media has become a ubiquitous part of modern life, and many people spend a significant amount
of time on these platform every day. While social media can have many positive effects, such as
facilitating social connections and providing a platform for self-expression, it can also have negative
effects on mental health. For example, social media use has been associated with increased levels of
anxiety, depression, and loneliness, as well as decreased self-esteem and body image issues.

By conducting research on the effects of social media on mental health, researchers aim to identify the
specific ways in which social media use can impact phycological well-being. This includes investigating
the mechanisms through which social media use can lead to negative outcomes, such as comparing
oneself to others, experiencing cyber bullying, or feeling overwhelmed by social pressure. Additionally,
researchers may explore ways to mitigate these negative effects, such as through interventions aimed at
promoting healthy social media habits or providing resources for individuals experiencing mental health
difficulties related to social media use. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to inform policies and
practices that promote positive mental health outcomes for individuals who use social media.

Statement of the Problem

Specifically, the study aims to explore how social media usage patterns, frequency, and duration
may impact various aspects of well-being such as mental health, emotional regulation, social
relationship, academic performance, and physical health. The research will attempt to address the
following questions:

1. What is the relationship between social media use and mental health among students?

1.1 depression

1.2 anxiety

1.3 stress

1.4 loneliness

1.5 suidical thoughts

Significance of the Study

This study aims to investigate the effects of social media use on well-being of Senior High School of
Capul Agro Industrial School.
Student. Research on social media use among students can inform policy decisions related to internet
safety and cyber bullying. It can also inform policies related to the use of social media in educational
settings, such as guidelines for teachers and students on appropriate social media use in the classroom.

Social Media User. Individuals who use social media regularly might be interested in learning about the
potential effects that social media use can have on their mental health. Our research could help them to
better understand how social media use can impact their well-being and potentially make more
informed decisions about their social media use.

Parents and Educators. Parents and educators might be interested in our research as it could inform
their understanding of how social media use affects children and adolescents. They might also be
interested in using our research to develop guidelines or best practices for safe and healthy social media
use among young people.

Public Health Officials. Public health officials might be interested in our research as it could inform
public health officials related to social media use. Our research findings could be used to develop
interventions aimed at promoting healthy social media use and mitigating the potential negative effects
of social media on mental health.

Future Researcher. Sharing research findings with other researchers in our field can help to promote
discussion and collaboration around the topic of social media and mental health. We might consider
presenting our research in discussion groups.

Scope and Limitations

The scope and limitations were identified by the evidence involved in the study and review
process. Previously, 7 of the 16 studies were cross-sectional and slightly failed to determine the causal
relationship between the variables of interest. Given the evidence from cross-sectional studies, it is not
possible to conclude that the use of social networks causes mental health problems. Only three
longitudinal studies examined the causal relationship between social media and mental health, which is
hard to examine if the mental health problem appeared more pronounced in those who use social
media more compared with those who use it less or do not use at all [19, 20, 24]. Next, despite the fact
that the proposed relationship between social media and mental health is complex, a few studies
investigated mediating factors that may contribute or exacerbate this relationship. Further
investigations are required to clarify the underlying factors that help examine why social media has a
negative impact on some peoples' mental health, whereas it has no or positive effects on others mental
health.

This study tends to know the effects of social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, etc.)
addiction in the academic performance of the students.

The first source Neal (2012) stated that the term social media relates to the many easy to services that
anybody can use to interact with other people online such as Facebook, YouTube, Blog, Twitter and so
on and so forth. Therefore, using social media easy and simple services, enable us to create online
presence very easily as signing up for Facebook and Twitter account, subsequently create our own
content on the web within minutes. Besides that, academic achievement is the ability of student to
study and remember facts and being able to communicate his/her knowledge orally or in written from
even in an examination condition. FACEBOOK users may feel socially successful in e-word but they are
more likely to perform poorly in exams, according to new research into the academic impact of the
social networking website. Mostly students spend a lot of time on these sites during exams instead of on
preparation for their exams. The karpinski research shows that students who used Facebook had a
"significantly" lower grade point average than those who did not use the site. The majority of students
who use Facebook everyday are underachieving by as much as an entire grade compared with those
who shun the site. Researchers have discovered how students who spend their time accumulating
friends, gossiping and poking others on the site may devote as little as one hour a week to their
academic work. Karpinski says she isn't surprised by her finding but clarifies that the study does not
suggest that Facebook directly causes lower grades, merely that there's some relationship between the
two factors. May be Facebook users are just prone to interruption.

Theoretical Framework

The research use system theory and generalist intervention model (GIM) to guide and
conceptualize the ideas found in the data. System theory acknowledge the impact different system have
on the development of an individual. Different system include family, technology, and environment. As
identified in system theory perspective, an individual's behavior can be impacted by the direct and
indirect involvement with the micro, mezzo, and macro system that surround them. Thus, social media
has been identified as a system that can impact symptoms associated with mental health. The finding of
this research illustrate support for system theory as 100% participants agreed that social media impact
an individual mental health .

Additionally, by directly addressing two main tenets in the GIM ( assessment and intervention/
treatment), this study also has implications for this model. The goal of the GIM is to guide practitioner
towards identifying different stressors in a client system while providing intervention that address
mental health symptoms and help improve overall well-being. This is accomplished by the completion of
a thorough bio-psycho- social - spiritual assessment and appropriate therapeutic techniques during
mental health treatment. The outcome of effective treatment is dependent on the neends identified in
the assessment. The results in this research reveal that when agencies value the integration of social
media on mental health, there is more incorporation in assessment and treatment.
