Aims of the lesson:


- by the end of the lesson Ss will be better able to express opinions (likes and dislikes) when
talking about books.
- by the end of the lesson Ss will be able to use nouns describing parts of books
- by the end of the lesson Ss will be familiarized with activities in a bookshop and activities in a
library
- by the end of the lesson Ss will be better able to listen for specific information

Teaching aids: textbook, picture, audio cassette

Procedure

Lead in:
Do you like books? Do you have many books? Where do you get the books you read?

Activity 1
Aim: to familiarize the students with the topic
Time: 4 min
Procedure: ; T asks Ss to read the words in the yellow box and to translate them. T
introduces “to lend” and “to borrow”; Ss read the two examples in the book. T asks for
more examples (Ex: “Can I borrow your pen?”, “She never lends books to anyone”)

Activity 2
Aim: to better familiarize the students with the topic and to provide speaking practice
Time: 4 min
Procedure: T asks Ss to look at the two pictures in ex 1a and to match the words in the
box with the right picture. T gives Ss time to do the matching activity in pairs, then
encourages discussion like this :

A What is there in picture 1?


B A bookshop.
A Who is the man in picture 1 ?
B A shop-assistant.
A What is he doing?
B He's selling a book.
A Who's buying the book?
B The customer is.

Then , the same with picture 2.


A What is there in picture 1?
B A library.
A Who is the girl in picture 2
B A reader.
A What is she doing?
B She is borrowing books.

Activity 3
Aim: to reinforce the meanings of the new words
Time: 5 min
Procedure: T points to the librarian in the picture and asks: Does the librarian sell
books? T elicits the answer: No, he doesn't. He lends books.
T points to the boy in the picture and asks: What does the boy do in the library? Does he
lend books? T elicits the answer: No, he doesn't. He borrows books.
T checks the meaning: Does the boy buy books? No, he doesn't. He borrows books. T
asks: Can the boy keep the book or does he have to give it back? T elicits the answer: The
boy can keep it for two weeks only.

Activity 4
Aim: to familiarize the students with the parts of a book
Time: 5 min
Procedure: T uses the manual or some other books which he brings to the classroom to
teach the words: front/back cover, title, author, illustration, introduction, chapter, page,
table of contents, publishing house. T points to each part of the book, Ss repeat the words
for the parts of the book after the teacher.

Activity 5
Aim: to provide reading practice and to give information on The Secret Diary of Adrian
Mole and other reading preferences of English students
Time: 5 min
Procedure: T asks the Ss to read the In Britain box. Ss take turns to read.

Activity 6
Aim: to practise the words in context.
Time: 5 min
Procedure: ex 1c T asks Ss to read the sentences and fill in the blanks with the words in
the box. Answers: a) library; bookshop; b) author; c) title; cover; d) introduction; e)
chapters; f) table of contents; g) illustration; h) back cover; i) publishing house.

Activity 7
Aim: to provide speaking practice
Time: 6 min
Procedure: ex 2a. T asks Ss to copy the questionnaire down, working in pairs. Ss read
the questionnaire and complete it for their partners by asking them questions. T draws
students' attention to the fact that question number 5 refers to opinions about books and
some reasons for reading. Ss report to the class.

Activity 8
Aim: to provide listening comprehension practice
Time: 6 min
Procedure: ex 2b. T tells Ss they are going to listen to a reporter asking Kate about the
books she likes reading. T asks Ss to copy the number of each question in their
notebooks, first. T plays the tape. Ss listen to the tape and write down Kate's answers next
to the appropriate numbers. Answers: 1 yes; 2 a; b. 3 a; b. 4 a; b: c. 5 a. T checks the
answers as a whole class activity.

Activity 9
Aim: to provide listening comprehension practice
Time: 5 min
Procedure: ex 2c. T asks Ss to do the same as above after they listen to the dialogue
between the reporter and Steve. Answers: 1 yes; 2 c: d. 3 b. c. 4 a; b: c. 5 b. T checks the
answers as a whole class activity.

Homework assignment: ex 3 page 43. Ss have to write a short paragraph (6 sentences)


about their own reading preferences giving reasons .
