ABSTRACT

The study determined the extent of the second language

writing anxiety and writing performance of Grade 10

students in English in the secondary schools of Malimono

District, Province of Surigao del Norte. Specifically, it

sought to answer the level of second language writing

anxiety of the students as to content, organization,

convention and academic language used. It also looked into

the significant difference on the ratings of the

respondents and the significant relationship of second

language writing anxiety to the writing performance of the

students.

The descriptive research design was used in the study.

The respondents were the 264 Grade 10 students from the

different secondary schools of Malimono district. The

researcher utilized on adopted questionnaire particularly

the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory Tool. The

statistical tools used were; Frequency and percentage, mean

and standard deviation, ANOVA and pearson correlation.

Based from the results, this study found out that the

Grade 10 students have experienced a high level of second

language writing anxiety; the writing performance of the

students have shown satisfactory outcome as to content,

convention and academic language used. However, the

students garnered less satisfactory result in reference to

organization; the Grade 10 students significantly differ in

reference to their writing performance results, and there

exists no significant relationship between second language

writing anxiety and the writing performance of the

students.

Considering the findings, the following conclusions

were drawn; the Second Language Writing Anxiety (SLWA) is a

prevalent problem in language learning even for secondary

students, the writing deficiency in the area of

organization requires greater language input to ensure

better learners output, the students possessed varied

cognitive responses in coping with the emergence of second

language writing anxiety on academic writing task, and

facilitative second language writing anxiety must have

dominated over the debilitative writing anxiety.
