WHAT I CAN DO

Task 1

The cell cycle is a repeating process of a cell’s growth and division in an organism’s life. Most of the time,
cells will stay in the first to the third phase. Cells will only undergo the fourth and the fifth when it will
divide itself into another copy. The first to third phase together are called interphase, during which, a
cell will function in its normal routine till it deems itself being able to divide. A copy of the DNA is made,
chromosomes also come in this process. In the third phase, it readies itself for division, microtubules are
aligned for the fourth process, which is called Mitosis. The nucleus is then divided into two nuclei and
have the same number of chromosomes like the parent cell. The last process is Cytokinesis wherein the
cytoplasm divides.

It is important because it is what makes us function the way we are in our daily lives. Without said cycle,
our wounds would never heal or even food would never be available. The cycle applies to every living
thing, organisms living in earth and thus we shoukd recognize how significant it is to us.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

1. In the healing of a wound, blood will clot around the area affected, eventually forming a blood clot in
a few minutes. After a few days, a scab will form. This tissue protects the tissues underneath from
bacteria and such. Over the time, the scab will come off and the new tissue will become skin over time.
But others become scars if the wound is deep enough, this is because the tissues cannot bring it back to
its original state because the process of healing it is not like the original.

2. When you get a haircut, you do not actually get to cut the part where your hair grows from, which are
called follicles. These follicles are pockets that enable hair growth, from which cells are made from the
blood that passes through. This makes the hair grow even after getting a haircut.

3. Nails are made of keratin, the same material of your hair and top skin. Your nails still grow even after
you trim them off after the old cells are pushed at the root at the nail, new cells are produced and
become nails.

4. When seeds absorb water and nutrients, they break out of seed coat. The roots emerge and absorbs
the nutrients and water as well as light it needs to develop further. Once the plants have developed
some shoots or stalks, it can start undergoing photosynthesis.

5. A bud would usually be dormant until a flower is formed inside of it, eventually opening up and
becoming mature. This then continues until it wilts and repeats the cycle again, becoming dormant till
the time for the mature flower to bloom once again.
