Visual Literacy Lesson Plan Assignment

Art Standards: 5.5.2.2.2 Create: Generate and develop original artistic ideas: Generate plans for art that
investigates a social, cultural, or personal theme.

Art Objective Students will create their own version of The Starry Night using oil pastels.
Description of Students will be learning about Vincent van Gogh’s piece “The Starry Night”. Students
Activity: will brainstorm windows they look through in their house that has some sort of
significance to them. Then students are going to be creating an image of the view they
see when looking through a window within their own household using oil pastels.
Art sample used The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh
for lesson:

“Vincent Van Gogh’s piece the

pastels.”
“Notice the color palette he chose
when creating this oil painting. So,
Students raise their hands and answer questions
we know cool colors and warm
using their prior knowledge.

“Now that we’ve answered those
questions when brainstorming for

Explanation of The students will be learning a little bit about the piece “The Starry Night” using that
visual literacy then as the inspiration to create their own piece of artwork. The students are exposed
skills to an old piece of artwork where you get a look into another person’s view. This could
be in a unit of first-person artwork. Artworks that artists give the audience their view of
somewhere or something.
