Procedures in Taking Body
Lesson 1
Measurements for Ladies Shorts
List the body measurements needed in drafting skirts and blouse patterns in the
table below.

1. Waist Circumference
To get the waist measurement, put the tape measure around the smallest part
of the waist. Put two fingers to ease the tape measure. See figure 1.
2. Hip Measurement
Put the tape measure around the fullest part of the buttocks. See figure 2.
3. Thigh Circumference
To get the thigh circumference, put the tape measurement around the widest
part of the thigh in line with the crotch. See figure 3.
4. Hem/Leg Opening
Put the tape measure around the leg where the outseam/shorts length
ends. See figure 4.
5. Outseam/Shorts Length
To get the skirt length, put the tape measure at the side of your waistline and
level down the tape measure up to desired skirt length. See figure 5.
6. Front Rise
Taken from the waist down to the crotch with the use of a tailor’s square. You
can also get the rise from the side while seating on the chair. See Figures 6 and
7.

Fundamental Lines
1. Make a fundamental line or
T line using L-square.
Mark the corner as point A.
3. From B, measurements of
shorts/desired length (2’’ above the knee).
Mark it as point C.

Front Gartered Shorts Pattern
1. From E, ¼ hip measurement plus 1” across and square up. Mark it as point GF.
2. On point F, extend 2-2 ½”. Mark it as point HF.
3. Connect points GF and HF using the French curve.
4. On point D, extend 1 ½”. Mark it as point IF. Connect point HF and IF.
Note: *Label your pattern as Front and Back. From G label it as hipline, F as crotch
line, and point C as thigh line.
Cut the pattern and trace it to another pattern paper. Don’t forget all the markings.
**Add ½’’ seam allowances on side seam, 1” seam allowance in waistline and
hemline.

Now, that you are done with your gartered shorts pattern, you may now add a
patch pocket. Below are the procedures on how to draft the patch pattern.
1. Make a horizontal and vertical line using L-square. Mark the corner as point A.
2. From A, measure 6 inches for downward. Mark it as point B.
3. From A, measure 5 inches across then square it. Mark it as point C and D.
4. From BD, measure 1 ½ inch downward, square it and get the midpoint. Mark it
as point E.
5. Connect point BD to E.
6. Before cutting the pattern, add seam allowances as follows; top width 1” and
sides and bottom ½”.
