Drafting Patterns for Flared Skirt:

MELC: LO 1. Draft and Cut Pattern for Children’s Wear

Code: TLE_HEDM9-12CW-IIIf-5
Objectives:
1. Identify the measurements needed in drafting flared skirt;
2. Draft patterns based on the body measurement taken; and
3. Appreciate the importance of following the correct procedure in drafting.

Definition of Terms:

Flared skirt is very similar to an A-line skirt, except that it is mostly short and
flares out a lot more than your A-line. As it moves down, it circles out and covers
your bottom. When you are styling a flared skirt, wear a fitted top so that you do
not create a very wide silhouette.

Skirt is a part of the garments worn around the waist. Skirts have been in fashion
for centuries, though their styles and patterns have got evolved with the time.
Moreover, the best part about skirts is you can wear them on any occasion, whether
you have to dress formally or simply in casuals. Straight and pleated skirts impart
a sophisticated look to women. Here are some samples of skirts:

and provided with lining to hold the

ends to have a full effect.

A-line Skirt is the basic skirt that

has been customized to a great
extent. With slight flare having rough
shape of capital letter ‘A’, it fits at the
waist while slightly touching hips
and thighs; it is broader at the hem.

A-line skirts, but they have extra
flare, which beautifully covers the

Procedure in Drafting Patterns for Flared Skirt

1. Draw a construction line by tracing the outer

edge of the L square Mark corner point A.

2. Of the waist circumference less 1 inch

3. A – C is ¼ of the waistline less 1 inch.

4
4. In cases that measurement of line B –C is
not equal to ¼ of the waist measurement,
adjust towards point A if measurement is
more than what is needed. Adjust far from A
if measurement is less than what is needed.

5. Sway point B to point C using a broken line

with point A as reference.

6. Check ¼ of the waist measurement on

the dotted lines from point B to C.

5
7. B – D is the skirt’s length.

8. Sway point D to the opposite

side of the construction line with
point A as reference.

9. Connect dotted lines using the free hand.

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the missing words or terms to complete
the procedure in drafting the flared skirt pattern for children’s wear. Write
your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Draw a (1) __________ by tracing the outer edge of the L-square Mark

corner point A.

2. A – C is (2) __________less 1 inch.

3. Sway point B to point C using a (3) __________with point A as reference.

4. Check (4) __________ on the dotted lines from point B to C.

5. In cases that measurement of line B –C is not equal to ¼ of the waist

measurement, adjust towards (5) __________ if measurement is more

than what is needed. Adjust far from A if measurement is (6) __________

what is needed.

6. B-D is the (7) __________.

7. Sway (8) __________ to the (9) __________ of the construction line with

point A as reference.

8. Connect dotted lines using the (10) __________.

7
Activity 2: Let Me Ask:

Directions: Read and analyze the paragraph below, and

then fill in the blanks with the correct tools in drafting
pattern. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

In Drafting pattern, diligence and preciseness in

the measurement used should be observed at all times
using the following tools properly: (1) _______ for marking
lines; (2) ______ for connecting and measuring short
lines; (3) ________ for shaping curved edges; (4) _______
for connecting slight curves like hips and hem; and (5)
________ for measuring the body parts that may result to
an accurate pattern for garments.

8
Activity 3: Drafting Pattern

Directions: Based on the body measurements obtained and computed in

your measurement chart, you can now start drafting the basic pattern.
1. Using your drafting tools, follow the above procedure in drafting
Flared Skirt pattern.

2. Make use of scoring rubric in evaluating your work. Take a

screenshot of your evaluation and send it to your teacher.

Please refer to Rubrics for Pattern Drafting.

Objective: Draft Flared Skirt pattern correctly and accurately
