Edgar Dale’s Cone of Experience

1. VERBAL SYMBOL

- Texts or phrases that symbolize concepts such as terminology, laws, equations, and other
related notions are known as verbal symbols. It sits at the tip of the cone because there is no
visual representation of a subject, making it the most abstract learning experience.

ACTIVITY:

- Spelling Bee.

2. VISUAL SYMBOL

- Concepts are graphically represented through visual symbols. These symbols help our brains
understand and interpret things more easily.

ACTIVITY:

- Infographics and Flowcharts.

3. RECORDING / RADIO / STILL PICTURE

- This category includes both photos and audio files. Students are still merely observers at this
stage, albeit being less abstract. Because audio and visual components mix at the same level,
the idea that auditory media is superior to visual media is dispelled.
ACTIVITY:

- Audio Lesson Tapes / Podcasts.

4. MOTION PICTURES

Videos depict abstractions of processes and events that emerge when time and space are
compressed. Although motion pictures cannot recreate the richness of reality and show reality
in a planned and artificial order, there are certain advantages to this lack of directness.
Learning videos may include zoom and slow motion to emphasize key points, which we may
rewind and replay as many times as necessary. They can also remove unnecessary content
from the live version of the program.

ACTIVITY:

- Print Film

5. EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION

- The primary aim of educational television is learning movies and animations that engage both
the visual and auditory senses. Rather than creating genuine experiences, these mediums
provide exciting customizing options to create a purposeful learning experience.

ACTIVITY:

- DepEd TV

6. MOTION PICTURES

- Videos depict abstractions of processes and events that emerge when time and space are

7. STUDY TRIPS

- During study visits, students can witness numerous items, events, behaviors, and other
essential knowledge in a real-world context. This level provides pupils with a plethora of
genuine sights and sounds. There is a chance for students to briefly participate in a real-life
experience of a vocation or hobby.
ACTIVITY:

- Field Trip

8. DEMONSTRATION

Demonstrations are provided via visual descriptions of how something works. It also
functions as a visual instruction manual. When problems prevent everyone from engaging in a
hands-on learning experience, this style of instruction is often used. In certain ways, kids learn
by watching someone else complete a task.

ACTIVITY:

- Blue’s Clues

9. DRAMATIZED EXPERIENCES

- A scene based on real-life occurrences in which students can actively participate. Students
may experience a scenario even though it is not yet real through this technique. It also gives
pupils the opportunity to fail safely in a simulated setting.

ACTIVITY:

- Stage Play

10. CONTRIVED EXPERIENCES

- Because certain topics are extremely hard, this learning experience makes it easier to visualize
and grasp them. It also provides flexibility in teaching in some cases since these
representational models are simple to change or employ for educational purposes.

ACTIVITY:

- Simulations

11. DIRECT PURPOSEFUL EXPERIENCES

- Direct purposeful experiences are simple practice or learning that occurs in the actual world.
The bottom of the Cone of Experience provides the most immediate and palpable learning
experience. Learners are now actively engaged in an activity, which allows them to practice
using all of their senses.
ACTIVITY:

- Experiment
