Gatheround Scavenger Hunt - Educator’s Guide

(Created by Sarah Grace Rogers 3.29.23)

This scavenger hunt is intended to take place at the Atlanta History Center and directly engage
the Gatheround Gallery. Students will explore Gatheround to gain hands-on experience of
Georgia history by looking at historical objects that relate to Atlanta throughout time. They will
be able to apply historical knowledge to the activities in which they participate.

Georgia Social Studies Standards

The Scavenger Hunt will apply to the Eighth Grade Georgia Studies (Social Studies) Standards
of Excellence for Historical Understandings:

SS8H1 Evaluate the impact of European exploration and settlement on American Indians
in Georgia.
SS8H2 Analyze the colonial period of Georgia’s history.
SS8H3 Analyze the role of Georgia in the American Revolutionary Era.
SS8H4 Explain significant factors that affected westward expansion in Georgia between
1789 and 1840.
SS8H5 Analyze the impact of the Civil War on Georgia.
SS8H6 Analyze the impact of Reconstruction on Georgia.
SS8H7 Evaluate key political, social, and economic changes that occurred in Georgia
during the New South Era.
SS8H8 Analyze Georgia’s participation in important events that occurred from World
War I through the Great Depression.
SS8H9 Describe the role of Georgia in WWII.
SS8H10 Evaluate key post-World War II developments in Georgia.
SS8H11 Evaluate the role of Georgia in the modern civil rights movement.
SS8H12 Explain the importance of developments in Georgia since the late 20th century

All or some of these standards may be engaged by students, depending on what objects they
choose to explore further.

Scavenger Hunt Components

There are 4 parts to the Scavenger Hunt: (1) Mapping, (2) Describing, (3) Comparing and
Contrasting, and (4) Reflecting. Students will choose 10 objects from the provided list to
engage.

For Part 1 (Mapping), students will draw an outline of Gatheround and map the objects they
choose. A blank sheet of paper (with these instructions at the top) is provided in the student
2

packet. Students may draw in as little or as much detail as need to place their object on the
map. If educators wish to provide a more detailed map to students beforehand, they may do so.

For Part 2 (Describing), students will write a brief fact about each of these objects. These facts
are not intended to take up much time or space but must include something they learned about
the object, such as a year, physical description, event, etc. A chart is provided in the student
packet for this activity.

For Part 3 (Comparing and Contrasting), students will choose 5 of their objects to compare or
contrast to other objects in other galleries. Students will choose a Gatheround object from their
list (or, if the educator wishes, from the broader list or from the entire gallery) and travel to
another gallery (indicated as A through G on the provided map in the student packet. They will
choose another object from another gallery that they can compare and contrast to the
Gatheround object. They must list both objects, where the new one came from, and why they
chose that object. The student packets include a page with the parts outlined for 5 objects.

For Part 4 (Reflecting), students will choose one object to relate to contemporary issues and
Georgia History and present it to their group or class. A page is provided for students to write
down ideas if they wish to brainstorm.

Scavenger Hunt Options

Educators may engage any or all of the Scavenger Hunt parts. Depending on time and the
number of students, only one or two parts may be engaged.

Educators may also choose how many objects students must find and if they are to work
independently, rather than in groups. If educators wish to change the options of objects for the
Scavenger Hunt, they may do so.

Time

Two hours are allotted for this activity. We suggest dividing the students into groups so they may
work collaboratively and be able to complete all parts of the project.

TIme may be divided as follows:

Part 1 - 45 minutes
Part 2 - Completed concurrently with Part 1
Part 3 - 45 minutes
Part 4 - 30 minutes (divide based on number of groups/students)
