in invasion games, target and net/wall games, striking/fielding

Objectives

The objectives of the lesson is to:


1) Learn the history of the game of basketball.
2) Understand the rules in order to eventually play in game
during class.
When was the sport of basketball
created?

Basketball was invented by a physical


educator in Springfield, Massachusetts
named James Naismith in 1891.
The original basketball and hoops

The first basketball hoops were actually made of peach baskets and
the original basketball was made from panels of leather stitched
together.
When was basketball officially considered a
sport?

High schools and colleges began


to introduce the new game after
its creation and by 1905,
basketball was officially
recognized as a permanent
winter sport.
NBA in the Olympics

Basketball made its first appearance on


the Olympic programme as a
demonstration sport at St Louis 1904,
though it was not until Berlin 1936
that it was granted the official status
that it has enjoyed ever since.
Interesting facts about Basketball

1) Players were not allowed to dribble the ball until the year
1897.
2) When Naismith created basketball he intended for the sport to
be nine vs. nine and not five vs five.
3) Naismith also proposed that the game would have two fifteen
minute halves instead of what it is now (four twelve minute
quarters).
