BAB 1
1) Why did you conduct the study that was available in the previous years?
I conduct the same study because I follow the suggestion from the earliest studies that have the
same topic as my study. The suggestion shows that the future can conduct the same study in
different settings and using different variables as well.
2) What is the urgency of your research?
After reviewing and listing the previous study in empirical review, I found that there is a
necessity of investigating the implementation of Duolingo on seventh-grade students’ vocabulary
mastery in Indonesia. However, from the previous studies, I found that the study was mostly
conducted on the use of Duolingo as ESL, not EFL, where it is conducted in other countries
mostly, and only a few studies conducted research regardless of Duolingo implementation on
seventh-grade students of junior high school. Thus, in this research, I conduct the study in junior
high school because this is important for them to enhance their vocabulary mastery to the next
level. Other than that, I also want to test whether the theory of the previous experts that talk about
Duolingo can give significant effects on student’s vocabulary mastery and can give the same
result in this recent study or not.
3) Why did you investigate Vocabulary Mastery? Why not the other skills?
Based on the statement from experts named Bakti, 2018; Nguyen & Nga Thu, (2013) Some
students are lacking of confidence and pretend to be passively active while attend English classes
because of inadequacy in vocabulary which is can affect their progress in learning English even
they are aware of the importance of it. Many of the students they have seen in their study were
hesitant to utilize the new vocabulary, despite claiming to understand its meaning (Nguyen &
Nga Thu, 2013).
4) Can Duolingo be used to enhance or influence other English skills?
Yes absolutely. It is because Duolingo can be used as a platform to conduct the learning process.
It is suitable in learning activity because from its features, provides limitless modules, allows
teacher to monitor students progress through XP they got from answering quiz and completed
each levels based from the modules. Students also allow to learn and play each levels individually
anywhere and anytime
5) Why did you use the Duolingo? Why did not use another tool?
I use Duolingo because as mentioned by Ahmed, (2016) Duolingo can support the students’
vocabulary learning and motivate students to learn English anytime and anywhere. Furthermore,
it prompts the desire of learning a new language. Earlier studies also mentioned that Duolingo is
recommended to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. Thus, it grabs my intention to implement
Duolingo in practicing students’ vocabulary mastery in learning process.

1) Why use experimental research?
Because I want to apply and test the theory from the previous studies with the same purpose but
in different settings.
2) Why did you use a quasi-experimental design for collecting the quantitative data?
I use a quasi-experimental design because in this study I want to directly test the effect of a
variable on another variable by testing the hypothesis of a causal relationship.
3) How do you choose or select the sample?
I choose the sample by using a sampling technique. To collect the quantitative data, I choose the
sample by using simple random sampling, in which the sample was selected by lottery. While, for
the qualitative data collection, I choose the sample by using convenience sampling which
supports by using triangulation methods. In choosing the sample by using purposive sampling, I
set criteria for the sample. First, the student is from SPENDA Second, the student is from the
experimental group and was treated by Duolingo. Third, has the willingness to be involved during
the interview session. For those students who participate in my research they can be the sample of
the interview session as long as they belonged to experimental group.
4) Why did you use an independent sample t-test? Why did not use paired sample t-tests?
According to Pallant (2016), an independent sample t-test is a parametric test that is used to
determine whether there is a mean difference between two independent groups or two unpaired
groups with the intention that the two groups of data come from different subjects. It can be
concluded that this parametric test is used to compare groups not outcomes.
5) Why did you use convenience sampling?
I use purposive sampling to strengthen the result of the quantitative data. It is important to
examine how Duolingo affects students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, I use convenience
sampling to choose the sample to be interviewed. For those students who participate in my
research they can be the sample of the interview session.
6) Why did you use triangulation methods?
I use the triangulation method with several considerations. First, it is used to follow up the sample
if the data from the interview in the interview session is lacking. Second, triangulation can be
used to examine whether the data interview is valid or not. Last, it can be utilized to test the
trustworthiness between the findings of the quantitative and the qualitative data.
7) Why use an explanatory sequential mixed method?
I used an explanatory sequential mixed-method because I want to investigate more about the
effect of Duolingo on seventh-grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP N 2 Singaraja. By
using an explanatory sequential mixed method, the result of the data provided is more valid and
credible.
8) Why did you use that variable in this study?
I use that variable by following up on the previous study with the same purpose but in a different
setting.
9) Why did you use an interview to collect the qualitative data?
I use an interview guide to collect the qualitative data because I want to make the data more
varied and valid. By using an interview guide the researcher can follow up if there is a lack of
information, which the researcher must design a semi-structured interview with open-ended
questions.

Answer : My theis entitled “THE EFFECT OF DUOLINGO IMPLEMENTATION ON

Answer: I am interested in researching this because English learning in this era uses a lot of
technology, especially MALL because Mobile device help students to actively involved in
interesting learning activities that can be beneficial for developing good comprehension, facilitate
vocabulary growth, and decrease anxiety (Azli et al., 2018). researched about the effect of using
duolingo in vocabulary mastery because the topic is still relevant today and I want to test whether
the results of previous research can be proven or not if implemented in different settings.

5. What is the background study of this research? What is the problem?


Answer: The problem in this research I found from the empirical review that I read before, many
students are still difficult to develop their vocabulary mastery due to limited facilities, lack of
creative and innovative learning resources, and student are not feel confident when attending
English classes due to their limited vocabulary. It is supported by Essentially, vocabulary
learning is a crucial process of language acquisition in which it engages learners knowledge of
word definitions, word formation, collocation, synonyms, and so on (Metom et al., 2019). The
learners must ignored the lack of vocabulary because it would make them difficult to follow and
understand the teacher’s explanation and vocabulary mastery must be limitless (Cesarini et al.,
2021).

6. Where did you get this data of the problem? (It’s appeared when you don’t citate/reference)
Answer: I got this data from previous research on article, and my bad it turned out that I missed
this reference to put on my thesis. I am sorry for this inconvenience.

Answer : I chose SPENDA because this school get pretty good reputation in town with A
accreditation, and this school it has enough facilities on technology to support learning process.

problems identification?
Answer : There are the deficiency of interactive and fun classroom activities that students need,
the lack of confidence that students have in vocabulary mastery which caused anxiety, The
students lacked of basic knowledge in vocabulary skills mastery, The students are less interested
in studying vocabulary. These problems is identified based from preliminary study from previous
researchers and observations. Based from the problem and background study, there are several
questions such as; Is there any effect after the implementating Duolingo on students' vocabulary
mastery at SMP N 2 Singaraja ? How does the implementation of Duolingo affect the student’s
vocabulary mastery? These problems is identified based from preliminary study from previous
researchers and it is formulated based from the research method, that is mixed-method.

11. What is the aim of this research? Where did you get that?
Answer : the aim of this research are To investigate any effect after the implementation of
Duolingo on students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP N 2 Singaraja. And To describe students’
opinion on the implementation of Duolingo during vocabulary learning process. This aims
based on the research questions.

12. What is the benefits of this research theoretically and practically?


Answer : The theoretical significance of this research would be useful for another researcher in the
same field of the study and also useful for English teacher in providing theoretical knowledge of
developing learning activity to improve vocabulary skills through Junior High School students. In
practical Significance, it will impact EFL students in improving English Vocabulary mastery by using
Duolingo as the implementation of ICT in learning language inside and outside classroom also
teachers in improving teaching quality by providing tools that can be used in the classroom activity.

Answer : The difference between my research and other research are from the method used, the
samples, research settings, and the results from the research. As you can see in the slide
(tunjukkan slidenya)

15. What is the hypothesis of this research?

Answer : Based on the research that already have formulated above, the hypothesis that the
researcher proposes are as follow :

a) Null Hypothesis (H0)

There is no significant effect of implementing Duolingo in students’ vocabulary mastery.

b) Alternative Hypothesis (H1)


There is a significant effect of implementing Duolingo in students’ vocabulary mastery.

16. What is the method of this research? Why did you use that method?
Answer: I used an explanatory sequential mixed-method because I want to investigate more about
the effect of Duolingo on seventh-grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP N 2 Singaraja. By
using an explanatory sequential mixed method, the result of the data provided is more valid and
credible.

directly (kumpulkan langsung), data sekunder is the data from documents
Answer: the data primer that I collected are from the results of post-test and interview with
students. The data seconder collected from journal article or books, for example the interview
guide used RASE model as the the grand theory of interview guide’s blueprint.

For qualitative, How did you choose the participants? What is the criteria
Answer : The popuation is seventh graders from SPENDA. I choose the sample by using a
sampling technique. To collect the quantitative data, I choose the sample by using simple random
sampling, in which the sample was selected by lottery. While, for the qualitative data collection, I
choose the sample by using convenience sampling which supports by using triangulation
methods. In choosing the sample by using purposive sampling, I set criteria for the sample. First,
the student is from SPENDA Second, the student is from the experimental group and was treated
by Duolingo. Third, has the willingness to be involved during the interview session. For those
students who participate in my research they can be the sample of the interview session as long as
they belonged to experimental group.

19. What is the technique of data collection How did you do it?
Answer: I use quantitative and qualitative techniques. For the quantitiave, I use experimental
technique, for qualitative, I use interview.

Answer: I used interval scale because Data are mutually separated, logical, and scaled based on the
number of specific characteristics possessed, and do not have absolute zero values.

22. How did you process and analyse the data? Did you do it yourself or there is a help?
Answer: First I collected the quantitative data, and did the normality and homogeneity test to
make sure if the data was normal and homogeneous. After that the independent t-test used to test
the hypothesis and to determine whether there is a mean difference between two independent
groups or two unpaired groups with the intention that the two groups of data come from different
subjects.

23. How the results of your research? (lecturer will ask in detailed way of your results)
Answer : it turns out the mean score of experimental group is higher than control group and t-test
showed the sig. 2 tailed is 0.000 which is lower that 0.005 so that hypothesis is accepted.
Duolingo bring significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. Based on the effect size test,
the effect of Duolingo towards students vocabulary mastery was 0.39 which is considered small
effect based on cohen’d formula. Students give positive attitude towards the use Duolingo in
learning activity because Duolingo provides several facility to help them learn and helps them
face difficulties while learning.
24. What is the conclusions of the research? (bertanya simpulan kalau jumlahnya tidak sama dengan
identifikasi masalah atau tujuan penelitian.)
Answer : According to the description above, the usage of Duolingo to improve the vocabulary
mastery of seventh grade students at SMP N 2 Singaraja had a significant effect. The descriptive
and inferential statistical analysis back up this claim. According to descriptive analysis, the
experimental group's mean score was higher than the control group. It could imply that students
who learn with Duolingo perform better than students who do not receive the treatment.
Furthermore, the inferential statistical study suggests that incorporating Duolingo into their
learning process has a significant influence. Furthermore, the hypothesis (H1) that the
implementation of Duolingo had a significant influence on the students' vocabulary skills in
SMPN 2 Singaraja is accepted.
An interview with several students from the experimental group is being conducted to support the
statement. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews in which the RASE model was
applied to develop the interview guide. RASE stands for Resource, Activity, Support, and
Evaluation, according to Curchill et al. (2013). In terms of resources, the students agree that
Duolingo provides them with a source for learning English that is integrated with their
vocabulary skills. Furthermore, based on the Activity dimension, almost all of the students feel
that practicing using Duolingo can make vocabulary learning more enjoyable. In terms of the
Support dimension, students say that utilizing Duolingo can assist them overcome their language
issues. Finally, under the Evaluation dimension, the Duolingo might provide and state their scores
and learning evaluation also they can track their progress easily.

25. Why did you give suggestions? (Biasanya akan dilanjut dengan pertanyaan Memangnya hasil apa

Answer: The researcher expects that this study would be useful to teachers who are looking to
incorporate ICT into their EFL learning process. This study may also be able to assist teachers in
varying their teaching activities, especially when it comes to teaching vocabulary.. As a result of
this research, schools might expect to adopt new kinds of technology, particularly resources and
suitable platforms for learning that can also be used in other courses. the researcher expects that
students will learn more about tools that can help them improve not only their vocabulary
abilities, but also other vital skills. The researcher expects that this research will serve as a novel
resource for future researchers interested in applying the same theory or technologies.

Answer: Yes is this, the alternative hypothesis (h1) is accepted meanwhile the null hypothesis is
rejected (H0)

26. Where did you get the aim of this research?
Answer : I get the aim of this research based from the preliminary study and problems that have
been mentioned in background study.
27. What is the method of samples selection technique and how did you do it?
Answer : for quantitative data, I chose one stage random sampling by conducting a lottery. For
qualitative data, I use convenience sampling because I chose participants based on my own
criteria and can chose participant if the eligible to become participants.
28. Why chose quantitative
Answer: I would like to test the theory of previous researchers whether duolingo implementation
gives a significant effect on students' vocabulary mastery, especially seventh grade sudents. This
study also aims to find the relationship between 2 variables, namely Duolingo as an independent
variable and vocabulary mastery as a dependent variable. I use the quantitative method because
the data is more precise and can be tested statistically.
