I’ll just leave the invitation here. I don’t have the courage to see Apollon right now.
YUI: …!
When I went out into the hallway, I heard a sound behind me. It was probably the sound of a door
opening. Maybe Apollon came out of his room. Praying he would see the invitation, I left the dorm
without turning back.
BACKGROUND: HALLWAY
DIONYSUS: Oh, you’re back… that’s great, but where’s the main attraction?
I didn’t really do my duty all the way, so I could only give him a vague answer.
YUI: A-Apollon-san…!
I’d hoped he would come, but somewhere in my mind, I was worried he wouldn’t. But I was mistaken.
I felt guilty about coming back here by myself. It was like I ran away from him. Seeing his eyes for the
first time in a while make my heart skip a beat.
He looked uncomfortable, probably because he’d put some distance between himself and everyone
else.
APOLLON: I was worrying the whole way over here. About whether it would really be okay if I came.
APOLLON: But this invitation overflows with everyone’s feelings, and I don’t want to put those to
waste…
APOLLON: I figured I needed to face everyone and talk to them. …So, tell me. Why did you call me over
here?
1 T/N: Though most well-known for the “Oedipus Complex”, the main idea of the Oedipus story is the ultimate
inevitability of fate, despite one’s efforts to avoid it. The ancient Greek playwright Sophocles popularized the story
with his works Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonius, and Antigone.
YUI: That’s because…
Feeling that I needed to clear up his question, I searched for the right words. Should I tell him
everything, or leave the details for later…?
CHOICE
DIONYSUS: I-It’s about time, so let’s go. Here, everyone’s inside this classroom.
DIONYSUS: Don’t tell him about it beforehand. That wasn’t the plan, you know?
DIONYSUS: Get ahold of yourself, vice president. …Here, we’re going in.
For now, I turned my eyes toward the other gods. First Dionysus, then the other gods waiting outside
the classroom shook their heads. No matter what he asks, keep quiet about it…
When I answered, Dionysus, who was standing on the side, looked relieved. We had been in danger of
giving it away. This was our only chance to bring Apollon back. We needed to be careful about how we
proceeded.
We opened the door to the empty classroom and stepped inside. Dionysus and I followed after him…
and in the next instant…
BACKGROUND: CLASSROOM
APOLLON: Huh…?
There was a banner with the words “Thank you Apollon”, along with all sorts of messages written on it.
TSUKITO: Apollon Agana Belea, you have guided us and brought us together as a group.
TSUKITO: We have not yet expressed our gratitude for this enormous service.
TSUKITO: Therefore, we decided to prepare a place where we can show you our gratitude.
HADES: The sun is always bright and warm… it continues to emit light until the moment it sinks. There
was no one to wonder what happened afterward.
HADES: We took its presence for granted. But once it disappeared, we finally realized the sun’s… your
importance.
HADES: Please forgive us for not understanding your pain until now… We deeply regret it, and we thank
you.
Everyone nodded at Hades’s words. I nodded too. Why didn’t I notice until he was hurt? I could only
apologize now.
TAKERU: How long are you gonna mope?! You’re a man, shape up already!
TAKERU: We’re telling you we’re thankful. Who cares about your feelings?
LOKI: That’s so Ta-tan, though. I need to say thank you too! I learned how fun school life could be and
all.
LOKI: And I feel like I may or may not be partly responsible for the culture festival.
APOLLON: Everyone… I don’t know what to do when you’re suddenly so nice… I really don’t know…
HADES: You should be proud, Apollon. If possible, then from now on too… please.
APOLLON: Wha, from now on? What do you mean by “from now on”?
HADES: I said so earlier, right? There’s no world without a sun. You have to be there in the middle.
HADES: So, could you come back? I don’t want to force you, but we’re all hoping for that.
BALDER: More than taking responsibility and leaving the student council, I want you to bring life back to
the school.
BALDER: If you want to take responsibility, Agana Belea, then I think that would be the right way.
TSUKITO: I am in agreement. Please be our student council president until the end. Please light the way
for us.
APOLLON: I’m so clumsy, I can’t do anything… I might drag you all down again…
APOLLON: But you say you don’t mind? You’ll still take me?
YUI: Of course!
I answered him instantly. Those words weren’t just my own. They were everyone’s.
YUI: We don’t want to regret any failures. If we lost Apollon-san now, we would definitely regret it.
APOLLON: You spent time for me and welcomed me back, though I was weak and ran away… Thank you.
Truly, thank you.
APOLLON: I’ll return to being the student council president. And I want to be more useful to everyone. …
Is that okay?
YUI: Of course!
THOR: …Congrats.
The sound of party poppers resounded through the room. Cherry blossom petals and streamers came
down from above, thanks to one of Loki’s tricks. The whole room was like a giant kusudama. The scene
was breathtakingly beautiful. When I plucked one of the fluttering paper petals out of the air… “Thank
you,” was written on it. The lack of decorations in the room made this display that much prettier.
DIONYSUS: Apollon, welcome back! Enjoy yourself as much as you like today.
APOLLON: I’m back! In answer to everyone’s feelings, I’ll have lots and lots of fun!
DIONYSUS: Let’s get the food out immediately. It’s all stuff you like, Apollon.
APOLLON: As expected of you, Di-Di! I love you! Okay okay, I’ll go ahead!
Smiling, Apollon jumped into the center of the room. Emitting the same dazzling energy that he did
before, Apollon began to enjoy the party. We followed soon after, and the room became lively. As if
making up for the time apart, everyone smiled, chatted, and sometimes joked with each other. Those
who had prepared a present beforehand now gave them to Apollon. The circle of classmates was finally
able to talk comfortably after a long time. We could sense our bonds with each other from just the
casual conversation. We made many fulfilling memories.
APOLLON: This is about last time… but I couldn’t face you, especially.
APOLLON: I caused you a lot of confusion during the production at the culture festival. I really feel bad
about that.
With Apollon’s words, I remembered that moment. It’s not you… those meaningful words. He left them
behind on the stage when he left.
What was the true meaning behind that? I was extremely afraid to ask about it, but I’d always been
curious.
YUI: Did I do something wrong? Maybe you started to hate me, or…
I was surprised at the words coming out of my own mouth. Love and hate… it’s not like that, so why am I
asking?
APOLLON: Do something wrong…? Hate? No, of course not. That was all my fault.
APOLLON: I’d practiced with you every day until late at night, so when the real thing came around, I was
really confused.
APOLLON: Um, how do I put this? It’s too complicated for me to explain, but… I guess I can say my mind
just… deflated.
APOLLON: I had been misunderstanding something all this time, and in that instant onstage, I realized
that wasn’t the case.
APOLLON: It’s not your fault. You’re not at fault at all, so don’t worry.
I was worried that there was another reason. But Apollon shook his head.
APOLLON: From now on, as a friend… and as the vice president, I want you to support me.
YUI: A friend…
What more had I been expecting? Isn’t it enough that he returned to being the president? I tried to think
that, but it didn’t work very well. If these feelings were so easy to cut away, I wouldn’t have worried so
much that it affected my physical condition.
YUI: …
APOLLON: You’re quiet… what’s wrong? Maybe you can’t forgive me after all.
In response, I said…
CHOICE
APOLLON: What are you saying? You’re already more than a friend. We’re best friends, right? Isn’t that
right?
My heart sank when I heard that word. On the other hand, Apollon had an innocent smile on his face.
APOLLON: For many years to come. There’s no one who can understand me better than you.
Smiling, Apollon shook hands with me. I was honestly happy at those words, but I still felt sad and
miserable. Still, this was all I could say.
YUI: …!
I didn’t think I could put my feelings in order right away. He was my precious first love, and also the first
love I lost. When I finally noticed, it was already over, the sad conclusion. It still hurt to see his smile, but
I was glad to have experienced this pain… that was how I was going to think of it. There was some time
left until graduation, so I could get over it little by little.
LOKI: Well I was feeling kinda bad for what I did, of course, so I got you a cake for the celebration. Would
you eat it?
He took our hands and led us over to a huge cake. For some reason, it was decorated with some
ominous purple cream. I didn’t really want to put it in my mouth…
APOLLON: Wow! I’ve never seen a cake this big! And it’s decorated so uniquely.
He wasn’t fazed by this strange cake. Was it a cultural thing, or was it because he was a god…?
There was a hidden meaning behind that smile. He was probably scheming something. But I might be
wrong… I saw Apollon move toward the cake without hesitation. I needed to do something…
CHOICE
>Stop Apollon
>Have someone stop this
>Trust Loki and watch
APOLLON: Huh, why’s that? It looks so good. And besides, he took the trouble to make it for me.
LOKI: Right! It’s so tasty, noooothing scary about it. Here, come over here. Kehehehe…
APOLLON: I’ll waste no time then. Mm! It smells so nice and sweet…
He pulled a device out of his breast pocket and pressed some kind of switch.
LOKI: Ahh! So close!! If only you were a liiiiittle closer, 1HKO Celebratory Jumping Cake…
LOKI: Ah, geez! My target slipped away. What a pain… Ah, oh well, Balder’s okay too.
BALDER: Mmph…?
LOKI: Aaand click! Eat this, Baldeeer! 1HKO Celebratory Jumping Cake!!
Loki took a device out of his breast pocket and pressed a strange switch.
YUI: Ahh!
I immediately grabbed Apollon’s sleeve and pulled him to the side. In the next instant, the demonic
purple cake jumped cleanly into Balder’s face.
YUI: Ah…
BALDER: Mnn? What’s this? Is this the human way to eat cake? You think of interesting things.
Balder stood there with purple cream all over his face, looking calm and peaceful. He was truly a god
among gods.
LOKI: Ahollon, congrats!! Have a taste of my 1HKO Celebratory Jumping Cake! ☆ Here we go, click! ♪
He took a strange-looking device out of his breast pocket, pressed the switch, and… The next instant, the
demonic purple cake jumped with a boing.
LOKI: No no, you have to catch it with your face! Ah, I was so close…
APOLLON: Now you’ve done it, Loki-Loki! You mischievous little runt, now I’m mad!!
He cackled happily, as if he found this exchange pleasant. They were close to enough to joke like this
now.
Zeus yelled as he walked into the room, his face twisted in anger.
APOLLON: Z-Zeus…?
Surprised at the sudden appearance of his father, Apollon instantly came back to his senses. It wasn’t
just him. The expressions that were on everyone’s faces just a moment before were now completely
gone.
ZEUS: Since when did you have the leisure to fool around? Do not get carried away!
ZEUS: I can see that without your input. Do not make Apollon do something unnecessary.
ZEUS: Apollon, you have some nerve to participate in this idiotic ruckus when you are the furthest
student from graduation.
ZEUS: Do you honestly have the time to worry about others? Can you call yourself the student council
president here?
ZEUS: Sometime like you does not deserve a position with so much responsibility.
ZEUS: Have you forgotten your goal? I did not bring you here so you can play games with gods.
YUI: …!
I had nothing to say to his sound argument. The other gods were also speechless. If you looked in at this
very moment, of course it would seem like we were just playing around.
ZEUS: While the other gods have safely completed their duties, if you alone insist on fooling around
instead of studying, then school is over for you.
APOLLON: Ah…
ZEUS: You are at fault as well. Do not drag the sun god into depravity. Is spoiling each other all that
friends do?
ZEUS: I have heard of the failure at the culture festival from Thoth. Have you received an apology for
that?
ZEUS: Is Apollon taking responsibility for the failure? …Why are you silent?
ZEUS: You all share the same offense. To actually carry out these frivolous plans is unbelievably foolish.
ZEUS: What?
ZEUS: You… who are speaking to? Do you not know your place?!
A father and son, though the father was the omnipotent Zeus. It was a relationship that no one would
defy under normal circumstances.
APOLLON: I don’t care what you say to me. But, do not insult my friends…!
ZEUS: Hoh, this lot are your friends? This lot, who will do nothing but leave you behind.
ZEUS: How laughable. To speak this way of them even when they have gotten in your way.
HADES: I understand how you feel. However, restrain yourself. Nothing will be solved with fists.
APOLLON: Gh…
When he saw Apollon so shaken up, Zeus looked a little taken aback.
ZEUS: Apollon. You dare oppose me…
APOLLON: Shut up! Don’t say anything more… Don’t make me angry.
He interrupted before hearing everything Zeus had to say. His eyes gleamed with a strong light.
ZEUS: …For now, meet the standards for graduation. If not, this will have been a wasted effort.
ZEUS: Then produce some results. I hope that you all do not make negative efforts.
The atmosphere was so charged with tension that I almost couldn’t see them like a real father and son.
There was deep, invisible rift between the two of them. With those words, Zeus took his leave. He had a
complex expression on his face.
APOLLON: Y-Yeah…
LOKI: Ahollon, that’s amazing. I can’t believe you can defy the headmaster like that!
TAKERU: I’ve changed my mind about you. You’re reliable when it comes down to it.
Though everyone was praising him, Apollon’s expression was still dark. At last, he fell silent.
APOLLON: …
APOLLON: Alright! Shall we get started on cleaning up? …Thank you, everyone.
His usual smile had returned. Everyone looked relieved when they saw him.
APOLLON: You got all this ready for me. I’ll never, ever forget the joy I felt today.
Though he was forcing himself, he still showed us concern. Because we knew that, we needed to
support him. With this odd conclusion, the party we planned to Apollon came to a close. Though it had
been interrupted halfway, we achieved our original goal.
However, there was still unease in my heart. It was about Apollon’s anger. Wasn’t there something
between Zeus and Apollon, apart from insulting friends? I wonder what he thought when Zeus
appeared… Because I was worried about that, I couldn’t be fully happy about Apollon’s return.
BACKGROUND: SKY
A night in the height of summer… a few hours after the surprise party ended, I was spending time in my
room.
Apollon’s expression rose to the back of my mind. He had acted normally, but his smile looked so
lifeless. It was like a smile to make everyone feel better.
There were things he’d gained from that party, but on the other hand, there were things he’d lost… I
wondered if it had left a mark on Apollon’s heart, after his argument with Zeus.
I was really worried about him. What if he was depressed or worrying all by himself? That was all I could
think about. I didn’t want that to happen, so I decided to go find him.
I opened the door to the Greek gods’ room and walked inside.
DIONYSUS: What’s wrong? Business with me…? Like, maybe you forgot to confess your undying love to
me at the party?
DIONYSUS: No need to be so frantic about it. You’re gonna hurt this old man, you know?
HADES: You’re getting ahead of yourself, Dionysus. …We were just talking about Apollon. Including what
Zeus said.
Hades quietly closed his eyes as if retrieving his memories. But then… The door opened, and Apollon
appeared.
YUI: I came to check up on you, Apollon-san. I was worried you were hurt earlier.
HADES: Apollon, do not force yourself. Zeus’s foolish actions upset you, did they not?
As if remembering what happened, Apollon looked somewhere far away. But he soon returned to the
present.
APOLLON: But I want to know about Zeus. I want to know what he’s really thinking.
HADES: What turn of events is this? You’ve avoided him until now, haven’t you?
APOLLON: I do hate Zeus. He does what he wants and doesn’t think about our feelings.
APOLLON: But for some reason… I don’t even know why, but I’m curious about him. And about that
expression I saw at the party.
APOLLON: Uncle, what is that ominous prophecy you were talking about? What does it have to do with
that face Zeus made…?
HADES: It goes back to the time of Kronos, the father of Zeus and me…
HADES: “Your throne will also be stolen by one of your own children.” Kronos feared this prophecy, and
swallowed all of us whole after we were born.
YUI: S-Swallowed…?!
As expected of gods, the scale was entirely different. It couldn’t be measured by human common sense.
HADES: My siblings and I were swallowed, but with the help of our mother, Zeus alone escaped.
HADES: Then Zeus saved us, and he took the lead as we fought Kronos.
HADES: It was the Titanomachy2, a war that lasted ten long years.
HADES: In the end, we were victorious. Zeus gained the rights to rule the skies, and at the summit… the
right to the throne.
HADES: But Zeus received the same ominous prediction from our father. “Your throne will be stolen by
one of your own children.”
APOLLON: I thought he just wasn’t interested in me, but I guess he loathed me more than I thought… It’s
true he’s never acted like he treasured me.
The light disappeared from Apollon’s eyes and was replaced with sadness. They were father and son… I
stood in silent shock at Apollon’s words.
I thought of my own family. We were very ordinary, but my parents loved me. I’d thought it was that
way for everyone, but I had been blessed with that love.
YUI: …Because he feels that way, Zeus-san took a more oppressive approach?
DIONYSUS: That’s gotta be it, right? There’s no other reason… right, Kusanagi-san?
CHOICE
2 Dictionary entry: TITANOMACHY (in mythological tradition) A battle between Zeus and his father Kronos that
lasted ten years. Kronos had feared his children would overpower him, so he swallowed them one by one. Zeus,
who was only one who wasn’t swallowed, started the war to save his siblings. When Zeus and his siblings finally
defeated Kronos, the Titanomachy came to an end.
>That might be it
>I need more information
>I don’t think that’s it
YUI: Huh…?
YUI: I think the prophecy has a big influence on this, but I just can’t say that’s the only thing.
YUI: If he was worried about the prophecy, then he wouldn’t bring Apollon here. He would have
distanced himself from Apollon.
HADES: That’s right. And besides, he is not the type to worry enough about prophecies to avoid them.
HADES: Zeus has cut off this fate with his own hands. He is no longer bound by the prophecy.
YUI: …!
HADES: The son who was supposed to take his throne was born as a goddess, so Zeus was released from
the curse.
DIONYSUS: But we still don’t know if he’s really avoided it. Isn’t that right?
HADES: His attitude is different than if he’d received a prophecy… it’s a different kind of fear.
HADES: If he was afraid of his position being stolen, he would have brought his hand down the moment
any child of his was born. For that man, it would be a simple task.
HADES: But reality is different. You are alive. There should be some other reason.
DIONYSUS: Hey, what are you gonna do, Apollon? Continue studying alone for graduation? Or are you
going to resist and go back to the student council…?
APOLLON: I think I should talk with Zeus at least once. I want to know what he’s thinking. So I’m going to
see him tomorrow.
HADES: If so, then bring us along. If Zeus is still afraid of the prophecy, there is no telling what he’ll do.
CHOICE
YUI: I don’t know how useful I’ll be… but I understand. I’ll go with you.
Of course I also felt responsible for leading Apollon to graduation, but… I genuinely wanted to support
Apollon, even just a little.
Hades looked even happier than Apollon. He didn’t normally show it, but this was probably the way he
showed concern for his nephew.
APOLLON: I want to thank you too. I feel reassured with you there.
YUI: I would feel bad if I went even though I’m unrelated, and the conversation got more complicated
because of that.
HADES: You’re not unrelated. You were called here to educate the gods. You should know the situation.
YUI: Well, that’s true, but…
APOLLON: I want to know what you think, so don’t worry about it. And if you don’t want to say anything,
I don’t mind if you’re just there. I want you to be there.
YUI: If that’s so, then I understand. I also want to see this with my own eyes.
We decided on the next move to make, then went our separate ways.
ZEUS: …This is a school wide announcement. Representatives of each mythology, gather here.
THOTH: He is your son. If he does not produce results, what do you plan to do?
THOTH: As the one who created this school, how will you take responsibility?
ZEUS: I know.
The conversation ended there, and the light filling the room disappeared. When he saw this, Thoth left
the room.
ZEUS: …
A bitter expression on his face, Zeus laid the object on his desk.
BACKGROUND: HALLWAY
The next morning… I met up with Apollon and the others, and we went to the empty school building. As
we’d decided yesterday, we would speak with Zeus to learn his true intentions.
DIONYSUS: Apollon, are you nervous?
APOLLON: I guess so. I don’t know what will happen. It’d be a lie if I said I wasn’t nervous.
YUI: Me too.
If we could solve this peacefully, there would be no better outcome. We walked down the hallway and
soon arrived at the headmaster’s office. Hades, who was in the lead, knocked loudly on the door.
HADES: Let’s split up and seek him out. It would be better to end this quickly.
BACKGROUND: AUDITORIUM
BACKGROUND: COURTYARD
YUI: …Maybe I should go back to the headmaster’s office. He might have finished whatever he was
doing.
I somehow had that feeling, so I turned right around and went back the way I came.
BACKGROUND: HALLWAY
YUI: …Ah.
APOLLON: I couldn’t find Zeus anywhere, so I thought I’d come back to the starting point.
I ran down the hallway with Apollon. I still felt really conscious of the fact that we were alone. I couldn’t
calm down. However, he didn’t seemed concerned about it at all.
I need to put my emotions aside for now and do what I can for him. To help him graduate, and maybe
help the relationship between Zeus and him develop.
ZEUS: Apollon…!
There was nervousness between them, as if they were testing each other. The air was charged with
tension. Are they really father and son? The tense air prickled my skin, and I felt like I would falter any
second.
APOLLON: So we agree for once. I came here to talk to you about something, too. …Shall we start with
you?
Apollon walked all the way up to Zeus so he could be heard. It was then…
ZEUS: Be gone.
APOLLON: …!!
YUI: Ahh…!
The next instant, lightning flashed across the ceiling. Right underneath was…
APOLLON: What are you doing, Zeus?! Why would you…?! Do you hate me that much?!
ZEUS: …
Zeus did not answer. Lightning appeared near the ceiling once more. Thinking I needed to change this
situation, I thought of what I should do…
CHOICE
I could only scream in the face of this tremendous power. Mustering up my courage, I raised my voice in
defiance.
ZEUS: Do not talk back to me. If you are not silent, you will meet the same fate.
Apollon pulled me toward him, and we ran together toward the door. Even at a time like this, he
thought of other people. I was glad for his kindness. Apollon reached out a hand for the door… And
then. A bolt of lightning came down before our eyes and stopped his hand.
I tried to grab his arm to stop him, but before I could reach, he hit me in the head.
YUI: Ahh!
APOLLON: Stop it! Don’t touch her! …Are you okay, Fairy-san?
Apollon came to my rescue and held out a hand to help me up. Then, lightning appeared above us once
more.
These words were not just a threat. I could see the killing intent in his eyes.
APOLLON: This is outrageous! Tell me why, Zeus! Tell me why you hate me so much!
APOLLON: …?
ZEUS: I have foreseen your actions. I strengthened your limiter so you could not restore your form.
Apollon was in danger. I desperately thought of a way out of this. Should I stay here, or go get someone
to help? These were the only things I could do to stop Zeus. The path should choose is…
THREAD OF FATE
>Stand firm
>Find someone to help
I’ll call for help. We couldn’t stand against Zeus by ourselves, so I decided to go find someone else. The
sound of thunder reverberated throughout the room, over and over. I saw an opening and slipped
through the exit.
BACKGROUND: HALLWAY
Apollon’s words wouldn’t leave my head. I hurt him because he thought I’d run away. In order to clear
up that misunderstanding, I had to find someone and get back quickly. So I yelled as loud as I could.
I ran down the hallway, yelling. At the very least, Hades and Dionysus were in the school. If my voice
could reach one of them, they should be able to lend a hand in saving Apollon.
When I turned in the direction of the voice, I saw Hades walking down the stairs.
Apollon looked away from Zeus for a moment. In that instant, lightning came down.
APOLLON: …!
Hades ran up, and he pushed Apollon out of the way. And then…
HADES: Gah!!
YUI: H-Hades-san!
HADES: Yeah, it doesn’t hurt that much. Not compared to living in darkness and solitude.
Hades had burns on his arm. His skin was charred from the lightning.
HADES: What did you do to Apollon? Stop this idiotic behavior!
HADES: You fool! Toying with everything at your own convenience… You are still the same child that you
were long ago.
ZEUS: …
Zeus closed his mouth at Hades’s words. Zeus, who had showed everyone nothing but absolute
authority.
HADES: Apollon is our chosen student council president. I will not allow you to harm him.
ZEUS: You decided that on your own. I have not recognized him as the president.
HADES: A student representative is chosen by students. We weren’t looking for your permission.
ZEUS: Insolence…
ZEUS: Will you not move away from Apollon…?! You will get involved in this.
HADES: Let me know the situation first. I can hit you afterward.
HADES: Yesterday you scolded Apollon, but today you suddenly attempted to harm him…
HADES: What happened, Zeus? What is your reason for attacking Apollon? He is your son.
Rather than blaming Zeus, Hades seemed to be gently chiding him with that question. He seemed to be
drawing out the answer instead.
ZEUS: I cannot allow my talentless son to have a bad influence on the other students.
ZEUS: I will erase Apollon’s memories and send him back to his own world.
ZEUS: Apollon… In the near future, you will bring misfortune unto humans, and yourself fall into the
depths of despair.
ZEUS: I have called you here to study in order to avoid that future.
ZEUS: However, it did not go as I had hoped… You limiter shows no change in your fate. There is no
choice but to give up.
We’d tried all sorts of things, but Apollon’s limiter showed no sign of breaking. In this situation, I can
understand why Apollon’s thank-you party would have looked like a foolish ruckus to Zeus. Considering
the results without looking at the process, there was nothing strange about Zeus’s decision.
ZEUS: There is no need for experience without results. Besides, the experiences you have had here
might have put an even darker shadow on your fate.
ZEUS: I have chosen a more certain fate, so as to avoid an even more cruel outcome.
ZEUS: If you have understood, then step aside, Hades. I will erase this despair that exceeds despair.
ZEUS: Nonsense! Do not compare me to our father. I am different. I have overcome the prophecy!
HADES: Kronos could not trust his children, so he swallowed them. How are your actions now any
different?
HADES: They look the same to me. I only see a man who does things at his own convenience, unable to
trust his own son.
HADES: Change fate, Zeus. Your place as ruler may not have been taken, but you still drive your own
children to misfortune.
ZEUS: Then, what do you suppose I do…? Is there another best method?
As the one who created and is ruling this school, he must have been secretly worrying. And not only
that, he was desperate to run away from the cruel cycle of fate.
The power of a prophecy, hard to defy even for a god. It was something I couldn’t even imagine.
HADES: Change your actions now… the behavior that is sending your child into misfortune.
HADES: You should be able to do it. You are the man who changed the flow of destiny.
ZEUS: …
Zeus’s face twisted, and his voice was pained.
APOLLON: I’m happy you were worried about me. You didn’t want to see your son sad… thank you.
APOLLON: I know the power of prophecies very well… But this is the path I chose. I can accept any
outcome that comes my way.
APOLLON: Because of my memories here, I don’t care if I’m greeted with even greater misfortune.
ZEUS: You say you can accept this…? The cruel path before you?
APOLLON: The most important thing is to change myself to change the future. It’s not that outrageous of
an idea.
APOLLON: Look at the present, and change the future. Within sensible limits… struggle with my own
strength.
APOLLON: That is what we can do. I learned that here at this school.
YUI: Apollon-san…
As I watched Apollon exchange words with Zeus, he looked stronger, more resolute than ever before.
He’d probably matured through his life in the Garden. He had grasped the essence of humanity.
YUI: W-What…?
APOLLON: Huh…?
When he looked down, on his right hand… the ring, his limiter, had disappeared.
Apollon himself didn’t understand, and a look of confusion rose to his face.
ZEUS: Having accepted your fate, hoping for a change… that has made your limiter acknowledge your
graduation?
ZEUS: I had disdained you for your youth. You have learned and matured more than I thought.
ZEUS: Hades… if you had not come, this may not have happened.
APOLLON: I was able to change thanks to you, Uncle! Thank you so much for watching over me.
HADES: You’ve learned and discovered this by yourself. I haven’t done a single thing.
HADES: Well, think what you want… I take no responsibility if you misunderstand.
APOLLON: I’m a sun god brightened and blessed by everyone around me.
BACKGROUND: SKY
The final problem left at this school, Apollon’s graduation, had been solved… We held our graduation
ceremony a few days later. It was the same stage we used for the entrance ceremony, but this time, all
of our classmates were there.
BACKGROUND: AUDITORIUM
It’s been about one year since I came here… so many things had happened. But today would be the end.
Once we safely got our diplomas, we were to be sent to our own worlds.
ZEUS: When I look back on the lives I have given you here during this one year period, I can see that you
have all matured.
ZEUS: I am grateful for your efforts, for they have changed the future. From now on, I wish for you all to
devote yourselves to the world.
The entire student body applauded after Zeus’s speech. It was truly a loud sound, encompassing
everyone’s memories of the past year. These were the friends I’d spent my school life with together,
after being thrown into a new world, alone. Everyone’s faces were fearless, completely different from
their expressions at the entrance ceremony.
What are humans? What is love? I didn’t think I’d conveyed it very well. I regretted that I was a useless
example, but seeing their faces, I was honestly glad that it turned out this way. The things I had done
hadn’t gone to waste. When I thought about this, the corners of my eyes grew hot with tears.
When the applause gradually died down, Thoth, our facilitator, announced the next speaker.
APOLLON: Yes.
His loud voice echoed throughout the gym. I loved even his voice.
My heart beat faster as I saw him brimming with confidence. Once this graduation ceremony is over, I
might never see him again. The only thing ahead of us was one final goodbye. I’d already made up my
mind, but I found myself faltering when I saw him in front of me.
Maybe I should have talked it over with him. I wonder what he’d think. Would he be angry? Various
emotions rose up in my chest and disappeared. Apollon stood up from his seat, went up to the podium,
and faced Zeus.
APOLLON: As I thought about the fact that today would be the last time I would see this school’s familiar
scenery, each step I took toward school was firm.
APOLLON: The reason every student was able to graduate on this joyous day, is because of the bonds
they have formed here. We have all spent our normal, everyday lives here supported by someone else.
APOLLON: I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone. Thank you… I’m truly grateful.
APOLLON: After graduating from this school, I will push on toward my future with all the things I’ve
learned here. I vow to tirelessly continue to challenge myself.
With those words, Apollon bowed his head to Zeus. The students behind him all bowed as well. Apollon
turned around and returned to his seat. Zeus watched him retreat, eyes full of emotion. I was just as
proud as if it were me up there. Apollon had pulled everyone along and led them here to graduation.
And he even overcame his own pain and trauma. Everyone had begun to clap right after he was finished,
conveying our feelings to him.
After that, Thoth announced the closing of the ceremony, and the curtains closed on our first and last
graduation ceremony.
At the same time, the students who had been prepared for this school vanished into mist. Their roles
were now over.
TSUKITO: It ended safely… everything disappeared without a trace, just like in the beginning. They will
only remain in our memories.
BALDER: Yeah. I don’t want it to end. But I feel a strange, refreshed feeling somewhere.
LOKI: What’s thiiis, are you crying, Ta-tan? Look, here. There’s tears on your cheek!
TAKERU: Hah? N-No way… Wait, there’s nothing on my face! You liar!
Lured in by Loki, Takeru wiped his cheeks. His eyes were a little red. Thor saw this and placed a hand on
Takeru’s head. Thor’s expression was gentle as he silently pet the shorter god’s head. Takeru was facing
away, his shoulders shaking.
DIONYSUS: I wonder if I got more humanlike. Ahh, it doesn’t look like I can be a god again, so maybe I
should just retire?
Everyone laughed loudly at Apollon’s comment. I wanted to enjoy our very last moments, and it seemed
everyone else was thinking the same thing. We joined shoulders and joked with each other as we
received our diplomas and left the gym.
Once the graduation ceremony was over, I went out to the sports field. I spent the last moments of my
time here listening to the weakening cries of the cicadas.
APOLLON: I’ve been looking for you, Fairy-san. I wanted to say goodbye to you.
APOLLON: I feel the same. If I could, I would want to stay here forever.
APOLLON: I’ve never really been concerned about time before… I’ve really changed.
APOLLON: Making an effort for someone else, sharing joy and sadness together… I understand those
wonderful things now.
I felt happy at Apollon’s growth, but also kind of lonely. It felt like I was once again aware that he might
forget all about me, a human.
APOLLON: I need to connect everything I’ve gained to the future. You’ve been running around teaching
me all these things, after all.
As if punctuating that sentence, he stretched upwards as far as he could. Apollon was already advancing
toward his future.
I was a little surprised. The image I had of the Underworld didn’t match his excited expression.
APOLLON: I’m visiting Uncle there. I’ve actually never been to the Underworld, since I’ve only ever heard
it’s a scary place.
APOLLON: But after talking and hanging out with Uncle at school, I got more interested. It’s a bond I
formed here.
APOLLON: If Uncle rules the place, then I don’t need to be afraid… I want to be around him more.
APOLLON: I need to thank Father as well. I wouldn’t have had the chance if it wasn’t for this school.
APOLLON: This is a place to form connections… new ones, old ones, everything.
All the bonds I had were new, but as I looked at Apollon, I agreed. Father and son. Uncle and nephew.
Older and younger brothers. A place where various relationships intersected once more. That was what
this miniature garden was to us.
I heard a voice from far away. When I looked, Hades was waving at us.
I felt like I would overflow with tears just hearing those words of parting.
…However.
APOLLON: But the fact that we met here is eternal. I won’t ever forget you or the things that happened
here.
We exchanged a final handshake. It was firm, so we wouldn’t forget the feeling of each other’s hands.
HADES: You should always take your niece somewhere nice. Ah, wait… you’re my nephew. 3
APOLLON: Geez, what are you doing, Uncle…? Is it going to be like this the whole way?
3 Original pun: meifu e iku nara, mei to futari de, “if you’re going to Underworld, take two nieces with you”
YUI: You seem happy, Hades-san.
APOLLON: Looks like I have hard times ahead of me… Well, whatever!
Though he seemed concerned with how he should react to Hades’s puns, he looked happy.
YUI: Yes…!
We walked up to where Hades was waiting for us. And the three of us walked onward, onward, toward
the future that awaited us.
NEW CHAPTER: Apollon Fate Ending 1 – “Bond between Father and Son”
YUI: If you’re going to blame Apollon-san for the graduation problem, first look at me!
ZEUS: You are too late. This has nothing to do with responsibility. I only seek results.
YUI: …!
Lightning incessantly crashed down on us. Apollon and I ran around the room, desperately trying to
avoid it. We’d tried to run out to the hallway several times, but every time, a bolt of lightning would stop
us in our path.
ZEUS: Resistance is futile, Apollon. You can no longer leave this place.
We were driven to a wall, our escape routes cut off. One step after another, Zeus closed in on us. His air
of intimidation made my hands tremble.
I reached out toward a shelf and threw any object I found at him. In response to this tiny attack, Zeus
expressionlessly dropped a bolt of lightning near me in warning.
YUI: …Gh!
ZEUS: Open your eyes. Fate will not change. Everything was for naught.
APOLLON: That’s not true! I’ve changed at this school! I don’t want it to end like this!!
APOLLON: At the very least, I want to talk this out with you! If we can understand each other, I want to
try!
APOLLON: What’s wrong with me? Is it the prophecy? What do I have to do to make you satisfied?
APOLLON: Can you not love me? Like a normal father and son!
ZEUS: …Father and son? I have never once thought of you that way.
ZEUS: …!
APOLLON: Zeus…?
When I followed Zeus’s surprised gaze, I saw a single leaf on the floor. It was fan-shaped, and its color
was faded, as if it had been around for many years. But it was pressed, so I knew it had been kept safe.
YUI: Palm?
APOLLON: Zeus…
Zeus picked up the leaf and laid it gingerly in the palm of his hand.
ZEUS: Where did I stray from my path? I did not truly want to resort to this.
ZEUS: I cut off that ominous prophecy so I would not become like my father Kronos. And yet…
4 Dictionary entry: PALM TREE (in mythological tradition) A type of evergreen tree. It has no branches, and is
covered with a bark similar to hemp. It blooms with grainy yellow flowers. Apollon and his twin sister Artemis were
born under a palm tree on the island of Delos.
ZEUS: Perhaps because I did not receive the right kind of love, I did not know how to act as a father to
you.
The bad experiences he’d had turned into trauma, and he continued this vicious cycle. It was much like a
cursed fate.
APOLLON: Why did you bring me to the school? You could have just ignored me.
ZEUS: It is your destiny to hate humans. In the near future, a certain person will betray you… and you
will bring harm to a great number of humans.
APOLLON: …!
ZEUS: And, regretting what you have done, you will spend an eternity in pain.
ZEUS: I do not wish to see you that way. …Only my power will save you.
ZEUS: I had thought that by creating this miniature garden and having you learn, I could change your
fate.
Besides building trust between gods and humans through learning, I never would have thought he had a
motive like this… It was hard to understand, but there was love there.
ZEUS: But that dream will not come true. Unfortunately, it produced no results.
ZEUS: Therefore, I decided to erase your memories and return you to your time.
APOLLON: I want to do my best here. I want to be with everyone until the end!
ZEUS: But… I have my responsibility as the one who stands at the peak of this school.
ZEUS: By spending time with you, the other gods may receive a bad influence from you. I am sorry, but I
cannot grant that wish.
APOLLON: I might still be the only one unable to graduate. But everyone says they need me. And
because everyone was here for me, I’ve gotten this far.
APOLLON: At first, I didn’t understand the point of school. But after working with everyone, living with
everyone… I learned the importance of friends.
APOLLON: I learned how wonderful it is be together. …Is that not a big step forward?
APOLLON: Caring for someone else, wanting to do something for someone else… do you want to erase
all of that too?
YUI: He’s cared for and treasured us more than anyone else.
He always liked putting his all into doing something for someone else.
YUI: Everyone else feels the same way. We want him to return to student council, and we want to
graduate together with him.
APOLLON: I won’t cause trouble for everyone. So don’t cut it off here. Give me another chance!
ZEUS: …
APOLLON: Zeus…!
ZEUS: However… there is the danger that you will become worse.
APOLLON: …This is different. I never thought Father would worry about me like this.
His words were close to a whisper. When Zeus heard them, the look in his eyes changed.
APOLLON: Father… that’s the first time I’ve said that. It’s kind of embarrassing.
APOLLON: I always felt like I shouldn’t call you that. I thought I was unloved.
APOLLON: I didn’t want to touch a nerve… That was all I thought about, so I made no effort to face you.
APOLLON: That’s why I feel so happy right now. …But, but you know…
APOLLON: I don’t mind if I’m met with misfortune. Father’s efforts and her efforts… and the time I spent
with everyone… I believe in them.
APOLLON: This one year you’ve given me… It might have been a tiny amount of time, but I believe it’s
led my destiny in a good direction.
APOLLON: If that’s just wishful thinking and I end up with a terrible future anyway, I’m fine with that… I
can accept it.
APOLLON: So believe in me too, Father. I’m your son, right? Please, believe.
ZEUS: ……
ZEUS: I might have been worried, having done nothing to act as a father to you, or to try to understand
you.
ZEUS: I looked away from your efforts and only saw the concerning results.
ZEUS: I wanted to save you from the painful future. …That was all I could think about. I could not see
that it was hurting you as well.
APOLLON: Then…
ZEUS: I will observe your status for a while longer. I will decide on your memories after seeing your
efforts. Is that alright?
YUI: W-What…?
Zeus looked at Apollon’s right hand. Something that should have been there wasn’t anymore.
The limiter, which had been a ring on his finger, had disappeared. When I looked down, the broken
pieces were lying on the floor.
ZEUS: In response to your strong will to work for others, it has recognized your graduation. Splendid,
Apollon!
APOLLON: And, Father… I think I understand you a little now. I’m sorry for turning my eyes away all this
time.
DIONYSUS: I heard some really loud thunder, what’s happening?!
Just when I thought I’d heard footsteps in the hallway, Dionysus and Hades ran into the room.
YUI: U-Um…
YUI: Y-Yes…!
When Hades looked at the hand Apollon held out to him, he gasped in surprise.
HADES: F-Father…?! To think such a word would come from Apollon’s mouth. What happened while I
was away…?
Judging from Hades’s reaction, their relationship had been completely cold before. But there was love
buried within that cursed spiral of cause and effect.
ZEUS: It appears you have all made efforts for Apollon’s sake.
ZEUS: Thanks to you, I have kept myself from losing something precious. And I have gained what I
wished for.
HADES: Heh, I see. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that expression on your face.
HADES: You clumsy father and son. Well, I didn’t force you to do this. I hate to say it… but I’m relieved.
Hades was still worried about his little brother Zeus. They didn’t exchange many words, but that was
probably enough for them.
DIONYSUS: Haa, I’m glad it worked out. We were seriously worried about you. Well, that’s that, I guess!
ZEUS: I have worried you… However, that is no longer necessary. Now, let us begin preparations for
graduation. I will send you all back to you original worlds.
ZEUS: Kusanagi. I could not thank you enough. The gods have learned about humans, and are able to
love.
ZEUS: If you only say the word, I will arrange a constellation to commemorate your achievements for all
eternity… How about it?
YUI: C-Constellation?!
DIONYSUS: It’s fine, it’s fine! You never get chances like this!
The gods all laughed, as if the sight of me hurriedly refusing was amusing.
ZEUS: Now, Kusanagi. I trust you will lead the gods until the end.
YUI: Yes…!
The problem had reached a conclusion, and all the gods could now safely graduate. And then, it was
time for our graduation ceremony.
BACKGROUND: AUDITORIUM
It was a grand final event, involving the entire student body. After acquiring out diplomas, we took off
toward our various futures. It was one very long, yet very short year. With these memories as our
support, we would move forward.
BACKGROUND: HALLWAY
Walking as slowly as we could, he headed toward the place we would part. Kronos, the god of time, was
almost ready to send us back to our various worlds. Until then, we spent the rest of our time in front of
the headmaster’s office.
BALDER: Though we caused a lot of trouble for you, thank you for sticking with us until the end.
BALDER: We may never meet again, but our bonds will last forever. Don’t forget that, okay?
TSUKITO: Good work during this long year. I will not forget the knowledge you taught me.
TSUKITO: I have been in your care. I am grateful, from the bottom of my heart.
YUI: I’m very honored to have spent time with you all in student council.
THOTH: It’s almost time. Those who are ready, get inside.
I exchanged firm handshakes with them, and I waved as I watched them leave.
The gods left for their respective worlds. I watched their backs until they disappeared, as if to burn their
image in my mind. I watched each of my classmates go in turn…
DIONYSUS: Apollon, too… It looks like he got closer to Dad. I’m happy for him.
He had worried for his brother in his own way. His expression was much brighter than usual.
DIONYSUS: I’m the one who’s honored. I’m glad I met you.
We exchanged a handshake.
Dionysus left, and when I turned around, I saw Hades was watching us.
HADES: There were ups and downs… But everything was solved thanks to you. I thank you again,
Kusanagi.
YUI: Because you were watching over Apollon-san and leading us in the right direction, we were able to
get this far.
When I looked back, he was always quietly lending a hand. He was naturally modest, so he didn’t even
notice when he was helping us. I even thought it was beautiful how understated his modesty was.
HADES: Well, he is my nephew. It would be a pain if the problem got worse. So I had no choice…
HADES: I feel relieved that I don’t have to look after my foolish younger brother or my stupid nephew
anymore.
Greek gods all seemed stubborn and a little clumsy. It was funny that they all shared that trait. I
chuckled.
Hades gave a small wave and disappeared into the headmaster’s office. And the last ones to remain
were me and…
APOLLON: It’s really hard to part with you. But we can’t do anything about it.
APOLLON: Besides, I have strength now. I have the strength to move forward.
APOLLON: So I’ll rush forward. I want to see where I’ll go, how the future will change.
YUI: …I’ll be cheering you on. I know you can do it, Apollon-san.
If I made a sad face now, I would just hold him back. I need to send him off with a smile. But even as I
thought that, I had to bite my lip to keep my sadness from turning into words.
All meetings must end with partings. I should have known that, but my eyes still grew hot.
APOLLON: I’ll cheer you on too. I’ll be watching from the sky.
APOLLON: If you feel like you’ll be crushed, remember me. I was a weak god, who was changed with
everyone’s help.
YUI: Yes…
I stared at him through my blurred vision, so I would never forget that smile filled with sunshine. I won’t
see him anymore. The first person I fell in love with. My love never became a reality, but I have plenty of
precious memories.
I squeezed his hand back, and we firmly shook hands. When we finally let go, Apollon smiled sadly.
APOLLON: Goodbye, Fairy-san. Goodbye. I am eternally grateful for the miracle of meeting you.
I’m glad I met him. There were some hard times, but I honestly believe that now.
YUI: Waaaaah!
The moment he was out of view, I squatted down right there and cried like a small child. Everyone was
even more important to me than I had realized. I didn’t want it to end.
I thought of everything that happened this year… The outrageous experiences were countless. When I
first came to this world, I was scared, and all I thought about was going home quickly. I worried over the
choices I had to make. I thought that there was no way I could lead gods. But after getting to know
everyone, the school life I had here was really fun. Even the things I thought were impossible were
solved when I continued to push forward. And I even had my first love and my first loss. I learned that
loving someone could be painful too.
Everything that was painful transformed into good memories, shining inside my heart. Those would
become my strength, lighting the path before me. They would drive away the darkness of night and
illuminate the world, like the brilliant sun.
