COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUSES

I. Objectives:
1. To familiarize the students with the apparatuses commonly used in the laboratory.
2. To identify and be able to state the function of the apparatus used in the laboratory.

II. Concepts:
Chemistry is an experimental science. We perform experiments and take notes of the observations.
The laboratory is equipped with apparatuses, tools, equipment and fixtures to be used in performing
laboratory experiments.

III. Procedure:
Paste pictures of the different apparatus identified in the table and state its function.

support stand or ring stand.
14. Iron Clamp

3

Heavy porcelain dish with grinder; used to grind

chemicals to a powder
18. Mortar & Pestle

Used to transfer small amounts of liquid

19. Pipet

are basically powder.
20. Porcelain Spatula

Plastic or ceramic reaction surfaces with slight “dips”

for containing small amounts of chemicals
21. Spot Plate

rectangular end; used to transfer solid chemicals
22. Stainless Spatula

Made of glass; used to stir combinations of materials

23. Stirring or Glass

Rod

Test tubes are used to hold, mix, and heat chemical

experiments. They are used as homes for
24. Test Tube microorganisms when people want to culture (grow)
them. They are also used as collections devices for
things like blood samples.

Test tube brush or spout brush is a brush used for

cleaning test tubes and narrow mouth laboratory
25. Test Tube Brush glassware, such as graduated cylinders, burettes, and
Erlenmeyer flasks.

A test tube holder is used to hold test tubes. It is

used for holding a test tube in place when the tube is
26. Test Tube Holder hot or should not be touched.

Test tube racks are laboratory equipment used to

hold upright multiple test tubes at the same time.
27. Test Tube Rack
They are most commonly used when various
different solutions are needed to work
simultaneously, for safety reasons, for safe storage
of test tubes, and to ease the transport of multiple
tubes.

NAME PICTURE GENERAL USE

5
Made of glass and filled with a red or blue liquid
(usually alcohol); used to determine temperature
28. Thermometer

A useful piece of glassware for adding chemical

solutions to a reaction vessel.
29. Thistle Tube

A three-legged platform used to support flasks and

beakers.
30. Tripod

Volumetric flasks are used to measure and store

solutions with a high degree of accuracy. These flasks
31. Volumetric Flask generally possess a marking near the top that
indicates the level at which the volume of the liquid
is equal to the volume written on the outside of the
flask. These devices are often used when solutions
containing dissolved solids of known concentration
are needed.

A wash bottle is a squeeze bottle with a nozzle, used

to rinse various pieces of laboratory glassware, such
32. Wash Bottle as test tubes and round bottom flasks. Wash bottles
are sealed with a screw-top lid.

Used to incubate samples in water at a constant

temperature over a long period of time.
33. Water Bath

6
A watch glass is a circular concave piece of glass used
in chemistry as a surface to evaporate a liquid, to
34. Watch Glass hold solids while being weighed, for heating a small
amount of substance and as a cover for a beaker. The
latter use is generally applied to prevent dust or
other particles entering the beaker; the watch glass
does not completely seal the beaker, so gas
exchanges still occur.

Wire screen with ceramic fibered center; used to

spread the heat of a flame
35. Wire Gauze

Reagent bottles, also known as media bottles or

graduated bottles, are containers made of glass,
36. Reagent Bottle plastic, borosilicate or related substances, and
topped by special caps or stoppers and are intended
to contain chemicals in liquid or powder form for
laboratories and stored in cabinets or on shelves.

Used to bend glass in the glass manipulation process.

It spreads out the heat in the bunsen burner over a
37. Wing Top larger area.

NAME PICTURE GENERAL USE

A metal tool for cutting a hole in a cork or rubber

stopper to insert glass tubing.
38. Cork Borer

It is used for firmly holding test-tubes, burettes and

other glassware in place when performing
39. Burette Clamp experiments such as titration.

7
It is marked with a milliliter scale and fitted with a

1. Why is it necessary for you Chemistry students to familiarize these Laboratory Apparatuses?
- It is vital for us, as Chemistry students, to become acquainted with Laboratory Apparatuses in
order to obtain information and maintain a sense of safety and precaution during the
experiments. This will also make it easier for us to utilize and recognize these instruments and
equipment during laboratory work, as well as understand their application. Using the correct tools
in the right situation and in the appropriate way can ensure a successful job and reduce harm.

2. Suggest two (2) ways to ensure safety use of laboratory apparatuses.

- Here are two suggestions for ensuring laboratory apparatus safety:
➢ Disinfect previously used tools. Using an appropriate disinfectant, spray or wipe all
interior surfaces.

➢ Use protective clothing, gloves, mask, etc. as appropriate.
