    Yehimi, 2019 recipient of our Laura Patricia Calle Grant,


    created this mural to honor the strength and diversity of women
    in our immigrant communities. The mural is marked by her
    signature combination of immigrant portraiture and the
    migrating monarch butterfly.

    Yehimi Cambrón is an artist, activist, and public speaker born


    in Michoacán, México and raised in Atlanta. Cambrón’s artwork
    focuses on celebrating the contributions and resilience of
    immigrants.

    The mural features a character painted in Kashink's recognizable


    style—a mask-like face surrounded by flowing black hair.
    Kashink says her paintings are a form of self-portraiture but
    invites viewers to offer their own perspectives.

    Kashink's work questions aesthetic codes and the definition of


    identity. Since 2013, she’s been wearing a pencil-on mustache as
    her daily makeup. She considers it a statement as well as a
    sociological experiment, creating random conversations with
    strangers about beauty, gender, norms, and freedom.

    This work was inspired by the artist’s recent reading of Octavia


    Butler’s Parable duology. In this mural, humanity has built a
    colony among the stars. The colony orbits an immense tree that
    facilitates life in a huge hyper-futuristic city.

    Timothy Short was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, and


    moved to Atlanta in order to attend Georgia State and pursue art
    in 2011. Tim constructs imaginative narrative spaces always
    centering on the Black figure. These stories are meant to venerate
    the everyday people close to him, often chosen as models for his
    work, using cosmological and celestial imagery.
